Do Your Part - Earth Hour

Earth Hour 2009 is here!  Do your part!

This coming Saturday, at 8:30pm local time, switch off your lights (and computers) for 1 hour!

1 hour is all it takes - and you won't be alone.  This year the goal is to have one billion people, throughout the world, switching off all but their most essential power.  It's a chance to take a stand - to show the planet you care.

So this Saturday, swtich off that computer, turn off those lights, step away from your TV.  Go and play Spot Light with your kids, have that candle-lit dinner with that girl down the road or go outside and simply look at the stars.

For more information, head along to the Earth Hour webpage.

Baldur's Gate has gone Live!

Congratuations to Ayergo and his build team on making it to the end of a long road to Live status, and expanding our Persistent World to include a second Live Server.  A ship now provides passage between the docks of Rivermoot in the Silver Marches, to the docks of Baldur's Gate.

For those who have not played on a multiserver Persistent World before, your character file will move from one region to another as you switch servers.  You may only keep one Live PC at a time though, even across both servers.

The BG PWC is now up a part of the Live Worldgate configuration.  Update and check out the new territory!

Open Application Server's Farewell

On the 20th of February, the year 2009, the Open Application server is put to rest. After many years of great service, the Open Application Server finally crawls into its final resting place, in the realms of the DM FTP. Since its first conception, back in 2004, the OAS has seen through countless of new faces. Maybe in the future some future Admissions Team and future Player Admin may seek to revive the OAS - to give it a good beating down and lay it out as the Welcome Mat for new members. But until then, it is going to be stored away.

*fires off a 21-gun salute as the OAS coffin is slowly carried away*

Over the next few days I will go about updating our documents to remove all reference of the Open Application Server. Thank you for all those legions of DMs and builders who have worked away over the years to make the Open Application Server the success it was. Thrasy, idoru, Ranger de Wood and HEEGZ are a few of the names that leap to my mind, but I know for sure that there are so many more who have spent hours and hours on the OAS that I apologies for not been able to list them all.

As of today, for the first time in more than 4 years, the Written Applications are the sole entry into ALFA. The Admissions Team and myself are constantly working on ways of making this system more and more straight forward and user friendly for applicants. Should you have any suggestions to further these improvements, please do not hesitate to contact myself, or any other Admissions Team member.

Application Advice : Character Biography and Hypothetical Scenario

Generally what we are looking for in the biography section of the application is some indication of the proposed character's persona and background. Who are they? Where do they come from? What motivates them? Then, in the hypothetical scenario, we want to see that persona, that background, that motivation, that character applied to the facts that are posed.

Accordingly a biography that gives us only the race, alignment and class of the proposed character is not going to pass. Neither is a biography that only discusses the character's history - while we do wish to know something of the character's history, we need to know a little about the character's persona as well. History is not enough, but it helps illustrate and illuminate personality.

A good personality description is required, but it is not enough by itself - we want to see that personality applied in the hypothetical scenario. For example, someone might write a biography for a chaotic good elf whose parents were slain by drow and whose major motivation is revenge against the dark elves, but if that applicant answers the hypothetical scenario (which involves a mysterious drow stabbing a nobleman who is leading a slave-child on a chain) by stating that he would bargain with the dark elf in the scenario to split the cost of selling the child at a slave auction, well, then we would question whether or not the person can actually role-play.

So - this is a role-playing project. What we are looking for is some evidence that an applicant can develop a three dimensional persona for their character - something beyond "I am a NG dwarf cleric of Moradin who hates drow" - and we want to see some evidence that the applicant can apply that persona in-game.

How Do I Join ALFA?

You can play on any of our servers up to level 3. To advance further you must fill out an application.

For the sign-up process to work properly, please be sure your login name (Gamespy ID), your forum account and the ID you chose for this website are identical.

Only use this application for NWN2 access.

Written Application

Simply click on the Sign Up Now! button, in the top right corner, to see the application thread. It may take a week to get a response. If it has been longer since you heard anything, first check your Spam Box, as emails are occasionally redirected there. If not, send an email to applications@alandfaraway.info and we will look into the problem. You can also join our Discord server to ask any questions. The link is along the lefthand bar.

Below are some quick links you may wish to read over before sending an application in.

New players are encouraged to log in and play up to level 3 with a shiny new PC on any of our servers: Moonshae Isles, Baldur's Gate, or the Silver Marches. Those who enjoy the ALFA experience and wish to join our most excellent community can make the application through the side bar on our main page (the one you are reading right now). We are worth it!

Remember to remain in character at all time, and no running without reason. Feel free to register for the web site and join us in Discord (also found in the side bar on this page). It’s a great way to ask questions, or find a DM and other players to adventure with. We are a friendly bunch, so don't be shy.  we won't be.
