Random Encounter Shops

Post by Blindhamsterman »

Hello!

I'd like to make a small suggestion concerning the random encounter shops.

Could we make it so that they have some unqiue items, more interesting stocks?

The reasoning behind this would be to make there be a reason to stop and consider purchasing items from them. At this time They cost more and have a poor selection.

I could see for instance the weapon salesman selling perhaps one or two +1 weapons, or a random chance for similar unique things.

I'd be happy to tool up items for each store, or directly modify the stores myself if anyone wanted to give me access? :)

I am, as always, in favor of actions that increase the availabilty of interesting and varied magical items for purchase "off the shelf" in ALFA.

A wide variety of appropriately prices wonderous items, skill boost items, weaponry and armor should all be able to be obtained without the need for a PC to find a patron DM.

I tooled up a variety of such items for the Provider's Shrine many months back. All are hin-themed and unique, although some are patterned after items I have seen in Rhyester's or the Kelemvor temple. I don't think they have been plugged into Erica's shop yet, though.
Talk less. Listen more.

I'd also love to see this sort of thing, especially where scrolls and simple magical items are concerned.

There are actually a very wide variety of interesting magic items in the mod, I tooled up something like 85, and i think the majority got included. Last I heard they were in wynna's random shops, so they only appear at random in certain stores. Probably a good number are in mod that aren't attached to stores though, the random encounter merchants, as well as the gnome of the clockwork tower do need some of these items permanently i think, low magic but interesting flavour

I think that the shops of Waterdeep in NWN1 were a great model for magical availabilty (except for that crazy extraplanar travelling merchant who sold every item in the creator).

Weapony and wondrous items were available for purchase, some items up to 15-20k gp value. I loved it. Even if you didn't have the coin you could window shop and then find things to save up for. :)

Yes these do exisit and I have "seen" them working as properly planned by Wynna.

As per magic "special" items, early TSM due to whacked out DMs like myself used to offer some thingies that very a bit over the top and still are enough to make Curm spit out his coffee if he finds them in the wrong inventory. I find that if people wanted specific special items, it is best to ASK for them via a merchant. Most smart merchants keep the good stuff in the back for the people who have the money, not laying around where someone can steal it.

(note: if the item says LESSER, make sure you do NOT give it to anyone under level 10, its sort of a joke by whoever made the Lesser item series way back when)

We also have random merchants that show up on the roads but it always rankled me that their random inventories are sort of boring. It would be fun to spice those up, at least with some working alchemist fire or fire bullets or something useful other than rusty swords.

ooh even better :D Do you also own a cape? everyone knows that all self respecting super heroes have capes! 8)

EDIT SO AS NOT TO DE-RAIL MY OWN THREAD :D

I believe random item scripts might be getting added to the merchants, depending on folks workloads etc, so we can rejoice. I also agree with others here that perhaps a couple of items per merchant unique to them would be nice. Low level magic items or trinkets like one shot items or well made weapons/tools etc :)

random item scripts already ARE added to the merchants for both servers.

The frequency is tuned low, but you'll find random goodies every now and then in shops (this is something wynna worked on and installed on tsm, and I installed with her help on bg)

Further work on scripting is unneccessary.

Now, items can be added to these alternate store sectors as they are made, so if you want the random items further developed in and of themselves, it's pretty easy to plug in the items, as the random item chests are already associated to the stores themselves.

(as an ie, I bought a ring of jumping +5 from a store in SIlverymoon, the ring being the random item spawned)

Hmm, I was under the impression that the wandering merchants weren't included in the random item spawns currently, if they are then all the better :)

ahh, misread your original post. Wandering merchants aren't included in that.

So...we're going to have lone merchants carrying around valuable and interesting goods?

*a rash of unexplained merchant disappearances plagues the Marches*

I must note one anamoly. On high population and event days I used to sell special items to vendors to put them in their inventories. Mind you nothing of any true server imbalancing cost but fun little things like Rings of + 5 Jumping.
