DM problem and a temporary solution

Post by Magonushi »

It seems that the DM client is hanging up only when there are 12+ players on.

Might it be prudent then, in the interest of keeping our DMs, to limit server capacity to 12 players until this damn bug gets fixed?

Sure, once another couple of servers come up so that everyone not in the first 12 can actually play.

Of course, this also would mean that for all those hours a DM isnt around (ie most of them) the server would still be limited to 12. Just think of the quite numerous people that can only play once or twice a week. How would they feel if every time they had time to play they couldn't because oh no, they are in peak hours and the 12 slots were full hours before they could arrive. Limiting it to 12 will end up running off players, which we need just as much as DMs.

I don't think frustration with the DM client will be the cause of many DMs running away. It might be preventing some from stepping up, but that is unavoidable.

In short, No.

Anything you guys can find out to optimize the server would be great. The rig is good and packed full of ram but there has got to be a way to improve it. All tech geeks send me some info and I'll do whatever I can.

Thanks Don

Alright how about this?

Get a rotation system going that only allows players to be logged in for five minutes before booting them? That way if you aren't in the first 12 you have a chance of getting in my repeatedly hitting the "Join Server" button.

Ideas?

For now, I think just asking all players to use 3D portraits (default standard, non-custom ones) is plenty - no need to lock people out from logging in, or make them relog every 5 min or anything.

Lets hope the change to 3D portraits does the trick.

Checking out other server forums. Seems like they are citing 2D custom portraits and the DMFI language tool as the two big lag makers for NWN2.

Some other (heavily populated) servers have the DMFI voice stuff all disabled.

I cite NWN2 as sucking as the reason it sucks.
