Essentially, we're proposing 3 tiers of decreasing value (&/or balance impact):
T1 - implemented first will be text based standards so DMs know what (time, materials, XP, facilities, etc) it takes for a PC to craft. No scripting knowlege required really, but all scripting will be based upon these standards.
T2/T3 - scripted versions of the above. T2 (proposed as +1 - +2 range) would require a DM auth a PC to start (one ingredient is a wave of the DM wand). T3 would be the same without the DM auth - intended for mundane items and magical consumables.
I don't know if we'll have the resources to do the latter for NWN1, nor if the HDMs/Admin would allow it. I do know that any progress we make in NWN1 will carry over (at least in part) to NWN2.

Alright, that's pretty clear to me how your planning this in tiers. What isn't too clear is that, as far as I understand, you want to have a complete list of recipes before you even start coding? Wouldn't it be more interesting to get a good base of recipes going, and insert the code. Then slowly adding more recipes as the time permits.
I'm not a coder, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but can't the code be made, and intergrated, even before any recipes are added? This would mean, in my mind, that everything is prept for crafting, except for the recipes, which can be added slowly, and the list (wiki anyone?) of recipes slowly expanded.
Also, another question. Will recipes be knowledge your character will need to learn (ooc or ic means, which is how cnr works, sadly.)? Or will you have to learn it through ingame advancement only, through certain custom skills or the like?
PS. For Haze2 we were looking at a crafting system that made sure only through certain ingame skills, recipes could be learnt and accessed. This ment metagaming amongst crafters would be impossible. I'd love to go in detail, but I think we'd better chat in IRC or something for that.

We're far more interested in getting the manual DM standards set at this point. If we can do that, we'll work on 'normal' recipies. Mundane stuff should be pretty obvious. Magical stuff may have some variance.
Does the Haze system allow *IC* transfer of knowledge? Can my crafter mage teach your crafter mage how he makes a Flametongue? I'm not too worried about this as we're planning on needing a DM for anything above basic +1 (and perhaps even that). If you can't justify how you learned how to make the Holy Handgrenade, I'm not likely to auth it.
IMO, all such recipies will be metaknowledge until learned IC. Some are easily researched, some aren't. Some may have easily researched recipies involving expensive/rare components, and alternate cheaper means (RP time, not necc GP cost).
All of that will come after we have T1 set though, and we don't need hard recipies for that. What we do need is examples of how hard/expensive reagents will be, and let the DM fill in the details.

It will be nice if crafting gets done right, Cassiel. Ive been following the discussion for months (hell..for years with multiple DMs/Admin as well). I hope they do it right and its not convulted. Im sorry I cant be all bandwagon like some of you are. I have been disappointed many times here so its hard to get behind something. Im a huge crafting fan so I hope it does work.
