Turn undead is a class ability for a Cleric or a Paladin. The Blackguard prestige class also gains access to this ability.

By channeling positive energy, a creature can halt Undead. The alignment of the character does not affect what happens.

Turning undead is a full action, which does not provoke attacks of opportunity. This ability affects undead within line of sight up to 60ft. (20m) away.

Attempt to turn undead may be performed a number of times per day equal to 3 + the turner's Charisma modifier (regardless of what mixed classes they possess). This number is increased by taking the Extra Turning, Extra Turning II, and Extra Turning III feats.

Turning Checks

The Check

When turning, first a check is made to see how powerful an undead creature can be turned. This is a Charisma check (1d20 + your Charisma modifier). On a given turning attempt, you can turn no undead creature whose Hit Dice exceed the result on the following table.

Turning Check Result Maximum Hit Dice Affected
0 or lower Class level – 4
1 – 3 Class level – 3
4 – 6 Class level – 2
7 – 9 Class level – 1
10 – 12 Class level
13 – 15 Class level + 1
16 – 18 Class level + 2
19 – 21 Class level + 3
22 or higher Class level + 4

Class Level

Clerics progress with Turn Undead normally. Paladins suffer a -3 to their class level for all turning checks, while Blackguards suffer -2. Cleric levels stack with Paladin or Blackguard levels (but not both) for determining class level. Sun domain clerics earn an extra +1d4 to their class level every check.

Turning Damage

A turner rolls (2d6 + class level + Charisma modifier) for turning damage. This is how many hit dice of undead you can turn. Sun domain clerics gain an additional +1d6 bonus to this total. Turners with the Empower Turning feat multiply this result by 1.5.

Effect

The turned creature acts as if rebuked and stands still, taking a -2 penalty to AC, and have their Dexterity bonus lost (if above 10, the score is set to 10 if they can be affected by ability damage). This effect lasts for 10 rounds.

If the turner has twice as many class levels (or more) as the creature has Hit Dice, they destroy (supernaturally kill) the undead creature instead.
