The silliest things in the entire secession process were that Scotland planned to delegate their potentially newfound sovereignty to the "collective sovereignty" of the EU, and that they were also considering either remaining on the pound sterling or going to the euro.

If you're going to be independent, then be independent, don't join the EU and lose all sovereignty. (If you think that an EU member state is sovereign in practice, take a look at Greece and think again.)

Given that seceding and joining the EU would have been a step backward from the current UK status with special concessions in the EU, I think it's good that Scotland voted the way it did.

Now, let's see if the UK has the stones to secede from the EU in 2017.

Theyve probably made out in the end. The promises given of further devolution of authority on a No vote oughta give them much of what they wanted with separation anyhow, the ability to collect their own taxes and handle their own welfare rather than everything coming to them from UK parliament. Opens up opportunities for Wales and North Ireland to ask for the same.

EU is not the same as USA.
The "federal" directives are minimal and open to wide interpretation by sovereign states within the EU.
it's still a whole lot more freedom than to be a part of the UK which is also part of the EU.

Anyways, I can't really understand the need for states and "freedom" anywhere in the western world.
The moment no one is trying to kill you it seems really irrelevant to me.
Maybe there are some administrative issues, maybe one government annoys you more than the other, but meh, big deal, if you really dislike the place you live in you can move. Be a Scot in France, who cares?
Nationality is highly over rated anyways.

But I suppose I've a very different perspective than most of you guys.

Well, the EU isn't the modern USA; it's closer to the USA in the late 18th/ early 19th century. All fighting about their disparate economies and how that messes up the function of the others, and stamping about and ranting about maintaining autonomy. I'd mention the xenophobia, but that's still the USA. So... ... y...yeah...

Don't worry, they'll get there! Just need a nullification crisis and a war fought by infrastructure.

We could have all of Europe join the United Kingdom. If it's the same thing in the end.

You might if you don't speak French and enjoy girls with shaved armpits. As an american who at one time spoke semi-passable French (not anymore) and spent a month in France, I thought it was kind of nice and wouldn't have minded living there. Sure everything was horribly expensive and mimes are strange, but damn the food was good (nowadays I think the US has caught up a lot in the food department).

But I can think of reasons for a US state to secede, like 24% of our GDP (though some of that does go back to the states, I'm not sure how much). What do we get for it? An overly-aggressive military, insanely expensive health care, and, worst of all, aid to a bunch of jerks in Israel. The states and more local governments provide most of the important stuff in the US, like roads. The same might be true for Scotland? I've no idea.

Ultimately the US got there the old fashioned way: by killing the southerners into submission (though many of them probably had it coming). Maybe Hitler was just ahead of his time?

Eh.
Still doesn't sound like a big deal to me.
I mean, seriously, no one is even threatening to kill anyone.

And if not France, you've a lot of other options.
Just sayin' those problems make me jealous.
