How did you find out about Alfa?

Post by CloudDancing »

So in planning for an open gateway server into Alfa, I wanted to know how new players (and old) found Alfa?

I had typed in a google search "playing D&D with Neverwinter Nights" in 2004.

I first came to Georage's Earthspurs and played there for a year. Chatting in tells with some other ES players I got the tip that ALFA might be a good thing.

I put in an application, created an elf rogue on Shadowdale, and promptly went out hunting deer (out near the Embergreen Farm ;) ). My first shot on the deer missed, it charged, hit me and did 7 hp damage to my 6 hp rogue.

I bled out on the spot. Total lifespan about 40 minutes.

I was hooked. :)

I was playing hard RP in a social server setting, when an alfa player held conversations with me for a few days, then invited me to check out ALFA. Been here ever since.
I doubt, therefore; I might be

2002ish was excited by the prospect of playing DnD online, did a little searching, found the old alandfaraway site with the looping 'welcome to a land far away' greeters. I probably made 2 or 3 applications before being shunted to the snowy OAS in 2003-4. Kinda like this:

Got started on Duck's old TSM and have been a noob ever since.

I used to play NWN online with Borgia and some other kiwis who ran TLR.

I joined, name dropped, and the rest is (sordid) history.

I found out about ALFA way before it went live. Mainly by finding the old website in a search for a good online rpg to play. I remember thinking it was the coolest thing, and the list of prospective servers was mindblowing. I guess I still had a child's imagination or something which colored my expectations, but it was still fun like hell that first day

I think the first time I heard of ALFA was when I was checking out NWNOnline, an early ambitious and fairly hardcore RP PW project set in Cormyr; they were comparing themselves favorably with ALFA in one of their posts. They definitely did have some potential, but 11 years later ALFA is still around, while NWNO isn't.

If I recall correctly, I was on some social server somewhere and someone mentioned a role-playing project called ALFA. I didn't know a thing about ALFA or about persistent world projects or much of anything except PnP D&D and drow lore. So, I dropped into ALFA chat, I think, and started talking about drow. Marklos, who was an HDM at the time, recruited me right there to be an ADM and build/run some drow stuff - ALFA was still in Beta at the time. So, y'all have Marklos to blame for me coming to ALFA.

Credit where it is do I guess. I was playing on haven, my first server in NWN2. I think I had been playing maybe....2 months(ish) before I met Duncans PC, and Duncan started talking to me about a PW world of permadeath called alfa. At first I almost chickened out, and he called me on my shit and convinced me. Got me here, and I have been in love ever sense.

I was playing in Haze and most people there were slagging off this thing called ‘ALFA’. I had the misfortune of dropping into SomethingAwful one afternoon and saw an entire multi-multi-page thread therein which was dedicated to slagging off this thing called ‘ALFA’ and everyone who played there. Latterly I was playing in Exodus and some people there were slagging off this thing called ‘ALFA’.

Considering ALFA was perhaps the least recommended PW I’ve ever seen spoken about I find it amusing that I’ve been here for longer than the time I spent at Haze or Exodus. To be fair to both Haze and Exodus, they were top games and I only left when each had closed its doors (or was too stubborn to realise it needed to close its doors).
