pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.

Its a pretty good guide for not alienating us. I was surprised at how many different topics it covered, and covered pretty well ... and then ... there was this one:

In the "Don't do this:"
Don’t ask or comment or joke about the female player’s or her character’s period.

Perfectly good advice.

And then the corresponding "Do this"
Just don't. Period.

Really? Really? Couldn't resist eh? Alas, I cannot complain too much because the article was written by a woman so she brought that one on herself.

The things we do …

Anyway, in general, the article has a lot of good advice. ALFA, however, is one of the most gender-friendly gaming environments I’ve ever seen (that and Vampire games of course). My pen-n-paper group, however, could probably use a look at this article (well, one or two of them – the rest are pretty good).

Reminiscing on my life through the mists of prehistory I recall what it was like to be in my teens and twenties. While I believe the article is good for its purpose of educating an all-male player group on effectively integrating girls into their groups it misses on one very important note.

It assumes its intended audience will actually read it.

I can't speak for anyone else but being preached to or told what to do by anyone I didn't absolutely have to listen to wasn't going to happen when I was that age. Not for sexist reasons but like many young males I had the "rebel without a clue" mentality.

And that mindset doesn't readily allow for open-mindedness...

Dunno. Put "gaming" and "girls" in a same sentence, and you're as likely as it gets to get attention.

I didn't read what what t-ice said but it seems we should pay attention to it and consider it culturally relevant.

It's not rocket science.

Rule 1. Don't be a dick OOC

Done.
"We had gone in search of the American dream. It had been a lame f*ckaround. A waste of time. There was no point in looking back. F*ck no, not today thank you kindly. My heart was filled with joy. I felt like a monster reincarnation of Horatio Alger. A man on the move... and just sick enough to be totally confident." -- Raoul Duke.
