St. John's, St.John...you say tomato, I say tomato. Yes, I meant Newfoundland. And I am serious about the Newfies not wanting me. I refuse to be forced to pay for a babysitter just to go fishing.

Yes, I tied them.

Here are some that recently went to Ireland:

Here is my Gaspe box for my own fishing:

Not really! In this case the analogy should be: "I say tomato, you say potato."

...since "St. John" is a entirely different city, in another entirely different province. So, the mix up on your end was legitimate, it's not just a "different way to say St. John's" ... :) And i've encountered the same thing with hundreds of others from other places... always not a big deal.
Someone would not call Chicago "Detroit" and say: "Well that's just what we call Chicago." ;-)

But I can see where the names are so close of course.

But since St. John, actually IS another city in another province, ...that is why I asked which one you were talking about.

Anyway. Cool you make flies for fishing. Cool you sent some to St. John's. Where's your catalogue, online? :P

Nah, flies are flies. Generally, people fishing for salmon know what flies they like. Generally, I know how to tie these flies. The salmon fly tying world is not so polluted with random spin-offs and variations of every single fly pattern 'developed' by every single tier thinking theyve 'improved' on whatever like the trout fly tying world. I guess those west casters tie some ridiculous variations with a single feather replaced then call it some new nonsense for their steelhead flies, but the left coast is a strange place full of strange people. Anyway, thats it. I tie trout flies too, of course, as thats what I fish most - even sell some of them thru the local flyshop.

Here is step-by-step of rusty rat. Surely if you have fished salmon you know this pattern. Try it yourself, its good use of time and enjoyable and rewarding, especially when you catch a fish on something youve created!

Galadorn,

You will do me the hugest favor in the world if you find anyone who builds cabins out there (and a dory). Everyone I have called has said they won't go out that far to build a small cabin and there are precious few people living out there anymore that are not in the tourist trade (i.e. people who can use tools).

Alternatively I'd love to buy a small dory and have it dumped it on my beach for future use - I will pay for delivery. I suppose I can travel with an inflatable boat, but it is not the same as a proper rowboat. I need to get off the beach to do proper trout fishing. There is a nice run of trout just out of casting distance in Trepassey. You can poach them if you go into the no fishing zone, but I don't like to cheat or pay fisheries a fine.

I might be out there this summer, but that depends on work and such.

Enjoy your time there.

p.s. capelin taste awful, but you already knew that.
