You might try a server with more people your time zone. I suggest Baldur's Gate. It has more static content and if you say on the roads proper, you won't be dying to much of anything.
Soloing is MMO style of play. Alfa is about connecting with people and roleplaying. So naturally without a D&D style party your characters will not live long including trying nearly all of TSM statics.
