Humans are, by nature, able to handle violence or not. The vast majority of people just never have to learn if they can.

Desensitized to imaginary violence, sure. I'd rather say humankind has never been as squeamish and unconditioned toward actual violence than it is today. Which is a good thing (the latter, the former is just as well). What has really changed is the gap between what is ok in the imaginary and in reality. Which has a nice twist of irony, as at the same time graphic depictions of imagination become ever more realistic in appearance.

It's a Long game plot, so that the governments of the world can kill wholesale and we will just howl and shout cheers about how many they managed to get in one swing of an axe or congratulate them on their efficiency when they shoot 5 with one bullet.
