Always have been, always will be, so saying we are 'small' is hardly an insult or a negative.Adanu wrote:Compared to other servers, PWs, and games? Hell yes, we're small.Zelknolf wrote:The "we're so small and sickly" argument doesn't really hold terribly well.
We are small because we have chosen not to allow the kind of gameplay that attracts people who call themselves XxXLeg0lasXxX whose only thought while playing is where the vorpal swords of ass kicking drop.

And I say we've gone way too far in that direction that we'd be called radically rules lawyer based now.Swift wrote:Always have been, always will be, so saying we are 'small' is hardly an insult or a negative.Adanu wrote:Compared to other servers, PWs, and games? It's one thing to frown on loot whores and people who don't care about IC/OOC differences, but we're so schizo about powergaming and levels now along with the rules lawyering it's pretty ridiculous. it encourages extremes and the mindset of hoarding due to this 'taboo' most DMs seem to have on actually giving good loot in game. The last time I've seen actual good loot would be BHM and Bogart, with the occasional drop from paazin when he DMed.

Re: Probably get locked, but oh well
At least on my time at MS, the PCs were more than pretty good on the wealth per xp curve we have. And that is more bountiful than the DnD standard. So I'm not sure where this comes from at all? (Maybe Zyrus has been ignored somehow, there are PCs with far sub-par wealth, too...) For what it's worth, I think if anything we were TOO spot-on with our wealth, so that every PC was within an inch of the average, allowing for too little variation PC to PC. Take this with the grain of salt that my sample is maybe a dozen PCs or so.Adanu wrote:it encourages extremes and the mindset of hoarding due to this 'taboo' most DMs seem to have on actually giving good loot in game.

Maybe if some players were not getting all their wealth from statics or other players and left DMs some room to move in their wealth limits they might see better items given out by DMs.Adanu wrote:It encourages extremes and the mindset of hoarding due to this 'taboo' most DMs seem to have on actually giving good loot in game. For example, we had a recent case on TSM where a low level player was gifted a magical item that immediately put them above their cutoff for not just their level, but their next level as well. What room does that leave a DM?
When your wealth is consistently at the high end for your level, you simply aren't going to see good items from a DM.

We didn't used to have this small a player base.. I remember back in ALFA1 when you would look at the list of servers Yartar/The Frozen North/Dagger Dale/Waterdeep/The Long Road/Loudwater/Skullport/Westgate/Northern Cormyr/Baldurs Gate and there was always like 5-10 peeps online at any given time per server. That add's up to 50-100 peeps playing.. Now days its more like 10-15 peeps playing total.. Where did the numbers go? Did we loose them to RL? Or did we loose them to rule changes? Is it because of not enough servers? I don't know.
Anyone?

Re: Probably get locked, but oh well
We lost them to the age of NWN and our choice to immediately move to NWN2 (and shut down the ALFA1 servers in the process). I can think of a few old ALFAns that we lost since their machines could not run NWN2.Stormbring3r wrote:We didn't used to have this small a player base.. Hello??
We had alot of NWN1 servers close down over the last 18 to 24 months before we moved to NWN2 and they only closed down due to lack of players and resources to keep them running and we had far less rules then (mainly related to player wealth) than what we have now. Do you not recall the long lamentations for our glory days before NWN2 even launched and the constant discussions for why we were getting smaller? It was never overbearing rules that came up that time around.
Re: Probably get locked, but oh well
Most of them left during NWN1's run, and we lost a good many during the ALFA1->ALFA2 transition.Stormbring3r wrote:We didn't used to have this small a player base.. Previous comparisons with activity and rule changes suggest that such changes typically increase activity, with no reliable indicator of duration (with the notable exception that when we banned new warlocks in the same month as the Skyrim release, we saw a pretty dramatic dropoff in activity, which we recovered from in the next two months).
Previous comparisons with activity and new servers suggest a significant short-term gain which settles to either no change or a change which is too small to measure after one or two months.
