Rathalan Whitsword retired just shy of lvl 13 after 2.5 years of play. The rest is Hully.

Given a rough estimate of 217 weeks since ALFA went live in Aprill 2008 that makes my total XP rate as 668 XP/week. Honestly I would have thought it would be higher as a nearly daily multi-hour player.

This post has no value.
Of course, you would be ALFA's highest-level highbie if this were so. 145k = level 17.

Best ALFA thread I have read in ages, makes me not miss this place at all

Considering the player base here is so much smaller then what it use to be in the "glory" days, surely cutting back on some of the stricter rules would be a good thing? After all with less players, policing the outsiders should be easier now right? :|

rather bring it to a close Gala than further blow it up. Let this thread die and when someone brings such a topic up in future I would hope that the people who are running for Admin of alfa would at least respond as such.

Guess the problem of leadership is that everything is personal.

Don't count on it with Curm and Zelknolf in admin positions.
First Character: Zyrus Meynolt, the serene Water Genasi berserker. "I am the embodiment of the oceans; serene until you summon the storm." Zyrus: http://tinyurl.com/9emdbnd

Second Character: Damien Collins, the atypical druid. "What? Being a stick in the mud is boring. No pun intended grins"

Funny things is, by my understanding that's exactly the purpose of the "dimret" type of systems: By cutting down the phat lootz and xpeez gained from playing a more griding-oriented type of game, there's room to cut slack on rules & persecution. After all if you don't get xpeez for it, grinding due to player boredom is not quite the beast grinding for xpeez is.

While I maintain there's an ideological conflict with our mission and "grinding out of boredom", it's still ok if that's the best people can do. The conflict being that I don't see ALFA's mission as providing people with entertainment to consume, but to be a sandbox where we provide entertaintment for each other together. To grandstand, I'd claim that's the whole point of RP, and what DnD was conceived for 40 years ago. Though there's more options for having toy trucks at that sandbox as opposed to only blocks, so the distinction cannot be drawn in terms of content available. It's the mindset difference that's the main barrier coming from the world of computer games in general, as I see it. Not everyone wants to cross that bridge, and we can't really blame them. Why take that effort for your fun if you don't see our "collaborative imagination" kind of fun as more fun than the kind where you can just log in and consume automated content?

The challenge we face is providing content to make the collaborative fun-making as easy as possible, without turning over the mindset from a collaborative imagination of characters on the stage of Faerun to playing the content provided from above and RP meaning saying hi and goodbye in an in-character fashion.

(There, that's my contribution towards the 10 pages 8) .)

This, pretty much.

Combat Expertise didn't die in the bottom of a barrel because you can get strikes for it; putting in a system that makes the PA unwilling to bring a kind of complaint to disputes solves a whole angle of drama and investigation (that is, not only do we dodge the drama, we also dodge the invested manpower in checking if the drama is necessary). Dimrets were supposed to do the same thing (though that one's likely to be scrapped with the new PA; foolish to write something that won't make anything better). AI rewrite is supposed to do the same thing.

Suppose it's rules-ey; I do kinda like the notion of handling rules by just making it impossible to break them, and continue to claim that the ideal state of in-game affairs would be to say (at least for the mechanics of it; I'm not a big fan of censorship) "Try it; if it works, it's allowed. If you die, lol be more careful."

Aaaaaand our population/activity is still double what it was at this time last year (currently trending downward, granted, but it looks like every July is slow). The "we're so small and sickly" argument doesn't really hold terribly well.

You can blame the big ball of fire in the sky for making people get out and do stuff in the supposed Real World for that trend.

Stupid sun. It burns.
