Skyrim

Post by Tegid »

Yeah, it's where I've been.

I'm playing a male Nord woodsman/hunter, Joric of Helgen. Imperials snared me in with their ambush against Ulfric and his Stormcloaks. Suspecting I was a scout, they sent me to the headsman's block when the dragon attacked.

I survived with one other Stormcloak and we made our way and refuge in the village of Riverwood. Tasked with sending report of the dragon attack, I travel north to Whiterun and tell the Jarl the news. He then sends me on a mission that hopefully will result in bettering our lands' defenses against any future dragon attacks.

In preparation, I've crafted my studded leather armoring with leather I tanned from pelts harvested in recent hunts. I'm a bow hunter, who's slain deer and wolves. My character cooks and eats the meat of his kills. The immersion factor this game provides is killah!

How's your game going? :)

Bought it three or so weeks ago, but haven't had much time to play yet. What I have seen, it's certainly good. Was a bit disappointed with the Dark Brotherhood quest line - that was so much better in Oblivion. Thieves guild seems a up-to-standard so far, however haven't quite finished it yet.

I’m a female Breton named Selya and while my path started off similarly to yours, (beheadings were voted #1 Method for Inhumation last year and are very in vogue!) it differed fairly quickly. I investigated some cities, affiliated myself with various organisations and declared Skyrim should belong to the Nords! I learned how to slip poison into the pockets of those who wrong me (these people will drink anything!) after my chosen method of greatswording people to death proved an ill choice for a would be assassin (who knew!). A woman named Lydia swore allegiance to me but I decided her great lack of perception and/or lack of pain receptors and/or great need to be a “trap guinea pig” for me, was ill suited to my desire to sneak around and we sadly parted ways. I have a new companion, a mage named Mercurio whose quirky sense of humour revolves around setting me on fire in narrow tunnels. He also valiantly steps on traps so that I might not get injured. Such chivalry.

It was looking good, I had friends, a loyal, if pyromaniac, companion, a shining future and all the hobbies a girl could dream of. And then things turned tragic. I paused and picked a mountain flower. And the dream shattered in a haze of fragrance. Now I sprint across Skyrim, my hands dragging in the flora as I pick petals, pods, stems, grasses as though my life depends upon it! I cackle maniacally as I elbow my way to the alchemy bench, loaded with all the ingredients I can carry and pestle and mortar my way to chemical success! Mercurio fells dragons while my battlecry is forever, “just one more juniper berry!”. Skyrim is awash in Resist Frost potions, supply far outstrips demand, but I cannot stop myself. My fingers are stained with juice and sap, and once… once, I consumed a human heart so that I might deconstruct its chemistry. I am, an Alchemaddict.

Forgive me friend, but I spy a clump of Deathbells and I am compelled to pick them. Skyrim’s great future can wait until I have stripped this ardent land of every last petal.

I went the route of the light armor sword-and-board warrior-- quickly deciding that the tyrrany of the Empire (they tried to execute me without a trial!) and the racism of the Stormcloaks (they want to oust all of the minorities!) both sucked, and got myself a very high bounty in all of the major cities (achievement unlocked). I dabbled in the guilds until the guards upgraded from "I know you..." to "Die!" and then just scampered merrily across Skyrim, finding words of power and dragon hangouts to murder their priests and make armor from their hides. And shout death at them; especially shouting death at them.

Also, shooting dragons with paralysis poisoned arrows is the raw essence of win. Yeah, I don't do much damage (see also, sword-and-board), but the arrows are just a medium by which poison is delivered (quite good at alchemy!).

Also also, master block-- charge everything. Watching draugr go ragdoll and flail miserably in the air is more fun than a basket full of kittens.

I also eschewed companions, foolishly thinking that the extra levels from fending for myself would be a good thing-- as it turns out, Skyrim is much better at leveling dungeons up with you, and it just makes the game harder.

game is full of win....

till you do the last quest for the civil way, go to [redacted] and find out that [redacted] and [redacted] do not turn hostile on eachother... but [redacted] does turn hostile on you, but remains essential and all the doors are locked... Bugs make me a sad panda.. especially when reloading a save from hours earlier and trying again does the same thing...

I chose an Argonian named Ragon, who is a destruction mage/thief crafty type. Even though you don't get extra fire damage like a backstab when you sneak, I love creeping up on bandits and letting the flames rip, finishing off with a sword blow.
I'm doing the exact same thing I did in fallout (ignore the main plot and explore). I am a thane in Falkreath so far. the only problem is if you level too much before you start the main plot, it's just too hard. Had the same problem wih oblivion. this time however, I'm leveling armor, destruction and combat skills first, so I can keep up with the enemies.

Fun - scorching packs of fleeing bunnies
- scorching in general
- killing a necromancer who had just ritually sacrifieced a priest, with scorching

not fun - fighting spriggans with the 'beam of flies ' attack. I need more ward spells

looking at a few mods for fire, water and such, to enhance the gameplay.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2396991,00.asp

This story has links to a website that has every book found in skyrim as one ebook for kindle and the like. That way you can read them on the train, bus or any other time you aren't playing skyrim, so you can spend more time running around killing things ( or collecting ingredients) when you are!

I like the story of the Bureaucrat sent to the Black Marsh, and 'Chances folly' the best so far.

After reaching mid-levels, I was totally "meh" -ed out of Oblivion due to the whole "world scales with you" stupidity. It made the whole game have no sense when where-ever you went, you met the same oddly-level-appropriate enemies and rewards. "The whole world is a game that exists just for you" is glaringly obvious and immersion-breaking.

There, said it, vent over. The question is is Skyrim any better? I seem to be unable to find a straight answer below all the hype and dissing on the interwebs. Yes the developers said they improved it, but has it really changed at heart?

I hated Oblivion too and could not finish.

Yes, it is better. While many of the "boss" fights while offer a challenge regardless of level, the wolf or bandit that nearly beat the crap out of you 10 levels ago will probably be 1-shotted with an epic kill scene the next time ya meet it. The 'issue' with armor/equipment scaling is still there; however, this really only applies to chests and merchants - youll not see mooks wearing glass armors ever, for instance, but as your level increases youll begin seeing better and better stuff for sale in the shops. And there are epic/daedric items this time that are powerful and unique.

I sitll have gripes with the game - mainly that the world feels...unmoving. I feel that Morrowind was able to somewhat achieve a living, breathing world as it gave you a sense of the place doing just fine without ya and its resident genuinely considering you an outsider. In Skyrim, on the other hand, the world feels more flat, as though nothing, nothing at all, happens that you arent the catalyst of and EVERYONE will treat you as their best friend after an initial conversation, despite you supposedly being an outsider, or even one of the hated beast races or elves.

Despite my gripes, the game is very good. The gameplay system is the best ever - much better than Oblivion and Morrowind, and the level up system with perks is a vast improvement over what used to be there. There are some issues with certain skillsets being overpowered, but its a single players game so this is less important.
Heero just pawn in game of life.

*looks around and sniffs*

I don't have it and don't plan on getting it. My system probably will struggle to run it even if I did.

Anyone wanna trade good BG/BG2 stories of valiant or nefarious exploits? My system does run games from 1998/2000 :(

I like it, but it's pretty much fallout 3 wearing a skyrim suit. Instead of pip boy, you have constellations.

Thanks for the input. I guess I will have to buy it at some point and try it out. Like a few months from now when it'll be cheaper.
