Sword of Shannara

Post by Ksiel »

So, I am looking for a new series to read. Is the Sword of Shannara series by Terry Brooks worth the read?

pretty good, though I'd say you want to read the first 10 or 11 books at least, it sorta mixes traditional fantasy with some more complex concepts as it goes along, has a few good twists a bit later in the series too :)

It's a great series with iconic characters that still effects my trains of thought in regards to creation of iconic characters.

:hic:

Other ones I might reccomend would be the classic, "Book of Three Series" by Lloyd Alexander from the same generation of writers that produced Lord of the Rings.

And why I say this because it predates pretty much every multiple book series that exisists. And it's themes and adventures were flatteringly copied in every simlair series after it (such as the Belgarion and Shannara.)

The Disney movie was a pile of mush compared to the book, oddly though. If you can make it through to Taran Wanderer and violently unprincessly Eilowyny are two examples of what molded high fantasy for the future.

Sword of Shannara is a very good series. Plot good ..darker at times than I thought it would be my first trip through. The Later novels set in a later Time period were good also but the original books still the best IMHO

Suggested order for reading the Sword of Shannara series from Terry Brooks.. I enjoyed the Sword of Shannara series and you certainly have enough books here to keep you busy for some time.

I would suggest you and everyone else read Brandon Sanderson's work. It's some of the most original stuff I've read recently and I really enjoy his writing style. Mistborn is an absolutely fantastic trillogy, the world and characters are incredible.

"A Hybrid fantasy, heist story, kung fu epic"

This could only be awesome. Being the utter WoW nerd that I am, though, it will have to wait until I have read Stormrage.

not directly related but hot damn this is a crazy good series (bewarned though it's a has some serious erotica in the novel BUT it is part of the story and completely makes sense.....just don' read it on the bus...seriously...don't :o ). She has created a very interesting fantasy world within our own history.

Oh and don't forgot... magic kingdom for sale---- SOLD!

loved that series :) (Sword of Shannara is a good read, I have been into mainly the Baen books lately, i.e. Raj Whitehall series, Belarius, which is really more alt-history fiction than fantasy).

Last one promise, if you can find them Thieves World is an excellent series and has lots of good DMing ideas since it is all short stories developing the world over time.

Cheers

I'm reading this now.

1/2 way thorugh 1st book.

Dont like it much but trying to persevere.

a) A bit juvenille
b) So far it's been an almost parrallel storyline with TLoR but on a much smaller geographic scale
c) Dont like the language much

Try stepven eriksons malazan books of the fallen. Takes abit to get into, but it's awesome (provided you not mind chars you like dying). About 5 books in it' starts to get a bit over-complicated (nowhere near as bad as robert jordan though) but redemes itself towards the end. Gritty stuff i like.
playing Nathaniel Ward - Paladin of the Morninglord and devout of Torm (cookie cutter and proud of it)

@Dorn: about what I remember of the first book, its on the same level as the Belgarion series by David Eddings, nothing special but somewhat fun read.

Something else that popped in my mind that I just read recently, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Company .

Interesting point of view for the main character(s) in that they are a mercenary company that ends up working for the Supreme Evil. First 4 books is all I have read, I believe a new one came out recently.
