Re: Rewarding DMs
As a former DM I will chime in to say that props, whether a quick "Thanks that was fun!" in a tell or a post on the boards was what always motivated me most. That and watching PCs make choices that put them further and further in the poop.

Whatever happened to the AO awards? In abeyance for two years? It was a nice way to remind people who's doing what, where, etc.

I'd say community shrinking. Not that interesting to have an employee of the month when there's just three guys aroundBrokenbone wrote:Whatever happened to the AO awards? In abeyance for two years? It was a nice way to remind people who's doing what, where, etc.

Re: Rewarding DMs
Trust.
Work from the assumption the DM isnt a backward retard who cant tell a D20 from a rock on the path. Back up and follow up a DM when he/she has a problem. DMs are at the "hard end" of ALFA and like anyone at that end of a service industry to really thrive and feel comfortable they need to know that those above them in the pecking order have their backs.
One of the most demoralising things for a DM in ALFA to experience is the first time they catch a player cheating and have to provide 3 months of detailed logs in order to get anything done about it.
Its not perfect, but swinging the balance of power out of the players hands and back into the DMs would not only allow DMs to weave the story they have envisioned but also bring us more into line with the core rule book's approach to running a game of DnD.

This is the god's truth. Let DMs run the game. Way past time for us to put the 'master' back into DM.Sandermann wrote:...

Re: Rewarding DMs
I would like to point out, that giving DMs tangible rewards for DMing might prompt people to become DMs for the wrong reasons, in order to get the same kind of rewards. Whatever it may be.
If you want to thank a DM, thank them, like many people have said. When I used to DM, having people actually talk about the events I did IC, send my "thank you"'s over tells, and generally take an interest, was the reward.
People DM because they are storytellers. The most flattering thing you can do for them is to be excited and involved with the tale.

Re: Rewarding DMs
Write stories or bio updates which take into account DM'd events, even if you're a horrid writer, it's always cool (from the DM's angle) to see whether you made an impression on someone. If not feeling something is library / forum quality, PM'ing it and it being posted in a DM forum is all good as well.
