Just saying hi!

Post by Happycrow »

Hi there. Russ Mitchell/Happcrow.

Played DnD since... wow.. since Reagan was in office (with low approval numbers).

Looking forward to meeting everybody and seeing what you're up to. Though I've always had a bit of a weak spot for Phlan, the Marches were, imnsho, probably Greenwood's best work. Once the DL's done, I should be bringing Crusty Forest People to a region near you. :)

Hi, welcome. If you need any help on TSM, we Dms are here for you.

We can provide access to special items and startup helps for new PCs as well as provide advice to playstyle.

My main advice is forget everything you learned playing World of Warcraft or MMOs. Very little of it, beyond group combat principles (and many people don't even use those) is going to help you here.

There are many schools of thought on this.

:D First and foremost is building relationships (social or common goals) through meaningful and authentic roleplaying. The name of the game is survival here and the ONLY way to survive is to find other "people" and depend upon them to help you survive.

:wall: Anti-social PCs or PCs that choose combat/looting over role-playing, find themselves quickly painted into a corner and die alone somewhere with no one to even claim their bodies when they die. That is NOT to say that evil is unplayable, you just have to be very clever to be evil and develop relationships to sustain your character.

 Plus solo RP is just not the heart of pen and paper style roleplaying as have you ever been in a session where it was one DM and one person all the time? As well don't wait for Dms to supervise your RP. You make your RP with other players and whether you sit in an Inn and chat or are out on patrols, we DMs will be able to find you and involve you in our plots.

First step, make a character who can survive through one skill or another as their main reliance. That can be stealth, strong constitution, cuteness  (so everyone wants to keep you alive,) healing powers, or generally being entirely indispensable in a pinch.

Second step, find a mentor if it is in character. Mentors will not power-level you but they will help connect you to the rest of the world and often can catch you up with all he news.

Third step, use the forums and IRC for all your questions.

Fourth step, don't get too attatched. Elaborate Bios are great for us Dms, but if you are careless with your delicate low level PC or travel the dangerous roads, you will most probably die. I have done the research and that is what kills pretty much 10 out 9 PCs.

We strive to keep things fair and as long as that relationship is respected and you follow the rules, your time will be enjoyable.

Thanks, y'all. There are a couple "flavor" items I wouldn't mind having for this character (bowmaker's tools, a skinning knife, that sort of thing), but they're just as easily rp'd out. Had a nice little encounter with some " 'venturin types" this evening.

The character is DEFINITELY intended to have a niche. Maybe even a useful one. :D

Welcome to ALFA, and good luck with your second character!

(ps, you can rename a regular dagger to "skinning knife". It won't do anything, but at least the flavour's there.)

Hadn't thought about it much, and gave him bowmaking skill just because it fit the character. Came out in rp, and some crazy bard with an accent even worse than mine said "you could make a good living doing that..."

Which Shakespeare, the part where I look down and say "out, out, damned spot" to the steadily-expanding crimson stain emerging from my arrow wound?

Or the part where I skin a deer and think "is this a dagger I see before me?"

don't listen to him, renaming weapons does nothing as far as flavor is concerned. they all still taste like metal...

she's exaggerating greatly - it's more like 9.98 out of 10 - just like politburo elections, and if you remember reagan, you surely remember those as well...

in any case - welcome!

welcome to ALFA :)

suspect you may be one of a couple of folk I welcomed via PM in game, but if not, Welcome again!

Cloud has a lot of good advise there, but most important of all... enjoy yourself, above all else, it's still supposed to be a game, a deep, involving game full of awsome RP, but a game nonetheless :)

Yep.
Cloud, seeing as my char has apparently stumbled onto a giant latent demand for bowyery, I'll definitely be trying to peg you to get, purchase and/or make a spokeshave for bowmaking. :D

I call BS on this, mainly due to the fact that it has nothing to do with playing an evil character and more to do with being a bad player in general. An as to the whole clever to be evil and developing relationships bit, its true but just because someones evil doesnt mean they cant have friends.

That said welcome to Afla.
