Veilan, your wikipedia link says the Octopus chose Spain for the final.

Should I tell here that I'm more than half Spanish (from both my mother's mother, mother's father as well as on my father's side from about 1815...) :D

Of course if France had actually played this world cup I would not have said that...

What ? France actually played ? You must be kidding me...

You have to give it to France, though - noone can self-immolate like them!

Hehe so true :D

If it wasn't for the insults and the strikes (so french!!!) this world cup would have actually been better than 2002. We didn't even score one goal then. This year we managed exactly 1 goal which is infinitely better :D

At the start of the tournament I put a throwaway bet of £10 on Spain to win & David Vila to be top goalscorer at 15-1...wahoo!

That wasn't a beautiful game. All the ball losses and faulty passes on both sides led me to believe they weren't actually playing against each other, but deliberately passing to each other. One has to admit it had more suspense than the Spain game however, where I sat down after 10 mins or so thinking "yeah, well... Spain's drastically better, only question remains when and how high they'll win".

Also, Paul's infallible, and I wonder what his market value is now :D.

Now, let's all cross our fingers that Seagermany manages the upset and kicks Spain's ass... but that's just a hope, isn't it... :(.

Cheers,

That might have gone better for the Dutch if they didn't keep kicking the Spaniards and played football instead.

Fun match to watch.

New Zealand can now claim the title of the only unbeaten nation in the cup.

there's only one thing to say....
Ingredients
2 (2-pound) octopus, cleaned
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups chopped onions
2 tablespoons chopped garlic
2 crushed bay leaves
1/2 pound chorizo sausage, sliced 1/4-inch thick
2 cups white wine
2 pounds fresh tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped
1 pound new potatoes
2 cans of chickpeas
2 quarts of chicken stock
Pinch of crushed red pepper
2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
Salt and pepper
Directions
Submerge the octopus in a large pot of boiling water for 5 minutes. Drain and let them cool. Cut the tentacles and center section into 2-inch lengths or chunks and reserve.

In a large pot, add the olive oil. When the oil is hot add the onions, garlic and bay leaves. Fry the vegetables in the oil for 3 to 4 minutes, or until slightly wilted. Add the chorizo and continue to cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Deglaze the pan with the wine. Bring the liquid up to a boil and reduce by half, about 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the potatoes, chickpeas, reserved octopus, and stock. Bring the liquid up to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Simmer the stew for about 2 hours on low heat. Stir in the crushed red pepper, fresh coriander and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Line the individual bowls with crusty bread. Ladle the stew over the bread and serve.

I heard that octopi like the colour red, so Paul was always going to pick a flag with red in it (Germany, Spain, Serbia) to win. I suspect Germany's 2 lost games were self-fulfilling prophecies.

Either way, don't shoot the messenger.

As usual, finale matches are among the most ludicrous to watch. The Ref was a joke too, but as his wife said: "He can't even keep our three kids in line, how is he supposed to maintain order on the field?"

As for Paul, considering the odds are what, 1/256, it's not that implausible... that's a lot more than winning the lottery, yet people also have won the lottery ;).

No, since he's always ticking off 8 numbers.

So let's see... TIME said america was on top of the game now as the world cup started.

Then, there was the big hype about how 20th ranked african nations were going to the semi-finals.

And then, there was the big scream for more south-american starting slots since omigod four of them made it to the quarter-finals.

What has come of that?

1. Spain
2. Netherlands
3. Germany

Let me quote Robin Williams here: "Give the ball to them, they are damaged people!" :D
