There was a bug that if you had a 2d portrait selected and you zone DMs randomly have a chance to crash if they can see the portrait or not. Back when everyone was using a 2d portrait it meant DMs would crash out of the game over and over and over because if you roll the dice enough times it comes up 20 eventually.
Is this still the case? I never heard about it being fixed.

not true. AnalogKid mentioned it once and said it looked cool.Magile wrote:This is because no one sees it.paazin wrote:i totally use a portrait and no one complainsHATEFACE wrote:I think it's odd how that portrait thing is only for ALFA. Gremlins in the server box?
People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.

Re: Does anyone know why this happens?
The bug with 2D portraits still exists AFAIK, and is experienced on other PWs as well as ours. It does not stop individual players from selecting 2D portraits, or other players from seeing them (if they have the same portrait files).
BUT.
When one or more players have custom 2D portraits active, and when the number of players on gets high (9+), area transitioning becomes almost impossible for DMs. So, as a player, you generally would not notice any "bug"... but you're potentially making life miserable for any DMs during busy times on-server, large events, etc.
This is why we STRONGLY discourage use of custom portraits; it's essentially harmless if you're playing with a handful of other PCs on a quiet server, but if the server happens to get busy (yay, players!), and a DM sees this and wants to come on and DM for them (yay, DMs!), the whole thing turns into an exercise in frustration for the DM(s), with zero indication of what the cause was/is, or who is actually the source of it.
I'm looking into the Kemo's Description UI mod linked in the Custom Content forum, looks quite simple to implement, so it will likely go in during the next hak update, to provide an alternative to the (sadly) still buggy 2D portrait system.

Interesting for the info, thanks AL.
Thankfully our populations on BG are rather small so I'll assume it's probably OK for me to keep my portrait unless DNM or some other chap with an Omega wand beats me with it.
