Thank you (NWN1)

Post by Mikayla »

I started this post as a reply to the recent “Maybe a strange thing” post, but as it grew, I realized I need to make my own thread. And so, here it is.

With the closing of Sembia, the last of ALFA's active NWN1 servers, I too see the end of my character, Sheyreiza. Sheyreiza was created ... 5 years ago? Something like that. Many years, 14 levels, and half-a-dozen DMs later she is my most beloved character of any game, computer or PnP, that I've ever played. Though I have not played her in a year or more (I think the last time I was really trying to play was around October of 2007, and the last time I logged in with her to walk around Sembia was months ago) I never retired her because I always held out hope that something in ALFA would change and I would find away to play her again.

I have tried NWN2 of course, and found some fun with Vellya the half-elf for awhile, and now I am playing around with a new character, Lotus. But for me, the fun times were playing Sheyreiza, whether it was in the Lonelywood on TFN, with Muse DMing Sheyreiza's rather stormy love affair with Jain'n, or in Skullport, with Ecclesia (sp?) DMing Shey's slow disillusionment with Qilue and Eilistraee, or in the end, the ultimate game for me, Vendrin's multi-server spanning War of the Spider Queen campaign which saw our ALFA characters play through Vendrin's twisted version of the canon events.

Playing Sheyreiza through all of these was a dream come true for me. I owe a great deal of thanks to Vendrin, Zakharra, and all the others who made it possible (including, actually, myself, since I built a big chunk of the underdark server). It was an amazing ride. There were times I thought Shey, an evil drow priestess of Lolth, would actually find happiness, such as with Jain'n at his tent the first time that they went out alone, or in the sacred grove when an avatar of Eilistraee appeared. And there were times when I knew despair through Shey, as when the Promenade of Eilistraee was under siege and Qilue was nowhere to be found. There were times I thought I was going to die - such as when I turned a corner in the underdark and found myself face to face with a hostile spider so big it was larger than my monitor - I was poisoned and at half-hit points by the time I turned around! After I got away, I had to get up from the computer and let my heart slow down. I knew sorrow through Shey as well, such as when Shey had to kill her sister-in-arms, Inthara, because that is what Lolth wanted (I am still soooo sorry Zak!). I knew desperation through Shey, such as when we barricaded ourselves in Ched Nasad's council chambers, struggling to hold off the Demon Lord Wendonai long enough for the mages to do their work. And I got to express my petty and vengeful sides as well, as Burt's character Phaerun and others found out to their dismay.

In short, that run with my character Sheyreiza was the most amazing role-playing experience I've ever had. Now that NWN1 in ALFA appears dead, I would like to make some thank yous to the folks who made my NWN1 experience what it was, primarily from the perspective of playing - some of these people no longer hang around these parts, but I will thank them just the same.

To Muse: Thank you for all the DMing on TFN. It was my first experience with what real role-playing COULD be. The stories you wove, which went way, way beyond “find this” “kill that” transport them” were amazing and engrossing. After explaining it once to my dad (a one-time ALFAn actually), he referred to ALFA as a “soap-opera with swords.” And he was right – and I am grateful for it!

To Grand Fromage: Thank you for hosting us on TSM while we awaited the opening of the underdark. Without a place to start and grow, I don’t think interest would have been strong enough to see construction on the underdark server finish. Thanks!

To Ecclesia: Thank you for DMing in Skullport. The Promenade would not (and indeed was not) the same without you.

To MShady: Thank you for playing Hignar, one of Sheyreiza’s most interesting foes, allies and friends. It was always dicey hanging out with Higgy, since I never knew if he was going to kill me or not, but at the same time, I (and Shey) seemed to have a real soft-spot for the grumpy-but-good-hearted dwarf.

To Darugith: Thank you for the times with Nikki, who was perhaps the closest thing Shey ever found to a kindred spirit.

To Burt: Thank you for Pharun, the most interesting characterI ever killed in ALFA, and probably the *only* one Shey ever regretted killing.

To all the folks who played drow alongside me, be it in Skullport (either time) or the underdark: Thanks for giving the ‘dark a try – and if I killed your character or ordered their death or abandoned them to their death … I am sorry that I ruined your fun. Shey is not sorry of course, being the black-hearted witch that she is, but I am.

To Faeryl: Thank you for laying the foundations that I stood upon. Without Faeryl’s voice here in the early days, I do not think drow would have been a playable race in ALFA, and I never would have spent so many years of my life here. She was ALFA’s dark matron before me – true, I became ALFA’s Valsharess, but it was only over Faeryl’s dead body (it’s the drow way). ;) Thanks Faeryl!

To Ebonith: Thank you for inspiring me in the early days with our forum RP. You gave me hope as to what we might achieve if ever an underdark server ever got off the ground.

To Marklos: Marky-Mark was the person who noticed me in chat and asked me to become an ALFAn based on the strength of my drow-lore. Little did I know he was roping me into what would become a multi-year obsession. Thank you Marky Mark!

To all the folks who contributed to building the Underdark server: Thank you! Much of what was given to me was never used, and much of what I built was never used, but I know that but for my efforts, that server would not have ever gone live, and I would not have ever been able to do it but for all the people who helped me, especially at the end … but then .. Faeryl and Vendrin get their own special thank yous.

To all the regulars of the Lonelywood Elves: Thank you for some of my most difficult and challenging times – while in Lonelywood I/Shey was scared, humbled, exhilarated, inspired, crushed, emboldened, empowered, imprisoned, loved and scorned. It was an amazing experience, and while Muse and Mr. Duncan may get the spotlight, what happened up there would not have happened but for everyone who played (and I am looking at *you* Kiyoti, Rilralia, etc.!) Thank you.

To Ogregrim: Several thanks – one, for playing Tottespiel, perhaps the most interesting person Shey ever met whom she didn’t kill. And for the two songs/poems you wrote about Sheyreiza. As Sheyreiza was (obviously) an extension of myself, I was touched. Thank you.

To Squamatus: Thank you for our time on Daggerdale. The death of your character (and my fav NPC) was perhaps, my favorite moment DMing in ALFA ever. It was mostly your doing for thinking outside the box and outside the limits of the game engine to make a better story, but at least I was smart enough to see your brilliance and go with it! Thanks for making that rivalry and its ending one for the ages!

And that brings me to my last three big thank-yous. These three people … well … I don’t really have the words to express rightly how I feel about our times together and what its mean to me.

To Zakharra: Thank you. Thank you being you. Thank you for being by Shey’s side from the very beginning to the bitter end. Thank you for always understanding. The night that I/Shey killed Inthara was the toughest moment of gaming I’ve ever had. I was crying, even if Shey was not, and you, well, you tried to comfort me! After I killed your best and most favorite character! You tried to comfort me! Thank you. You’ve been like a sister to me.

To Mr. Duncan: Thank you. Thank you for playing Jain’n – perhaps the person more people loved to hate than any other person in NWN1. Jain’n was the love of Shey’s life and her best hope for real redemption, until he betrayed her (in her eyes – I know Jain’n had a different view of things!). Shey’s relationship with Jain’n was the first time I saw how deep role playing could go (and no, for you perverts out there, I am not talking about cyb0ring! As Mr. Duncan can tell you, I don’t cyb0r – my real life partner doesn’t allow me too!) Though Shey and Jain’n were only together for a few real-life months, those months colored all the remaining years of Shey’s life in ALFA. And OOC, you have always been the person courting me to come back and play, and perhaps the biggest reason I came to back play in NWN2. In game, I think you are like my own special brand of boyfriend-heroin – I know its bad for me on some level, but I don’t seem to be able to get enough.  Thanks.

To Vendrin: THANK YOU. THANK YOU for the War of the Spider Queen campaign. THANK YOU. It was the single greatest RP campaign I’ve ever partaken in and it was literally a dream come true. In reading the War of the Spider Queen series, two things came to mind – one, I wished some of those clueless authors would have consulted me for some consistency :P and two, I wished I could play out those events as a drow priestess – and you gave me that chance! You put us right in the center of the biggest thing to ever happen to the drow since the descent. And it was awesome. Sometimes the game engine failed us – riding the dracolich around was awesome but there was no decent way to simulate that in battle, though you tried (like at the orc barricade) – but still, even though your dreams and our aspirations were bigger than the game, we made it work. I know this campaign was not as much fun for some of the others, and some of that was because I killed off or drove off their characters – that is a shortcoming of drow society as a medium for role-playing I think – and in the end, Zak and I were left alone to role-play with ourselves, and we had only ourselves to blame. But what a ride it was to get there!

Lastly, I want to put out a general thanks to all ALFAns who helped make ALFA-NWN1 what it was. I had good times DMing (Daggerdale and the drow-invasion campaign, the Bright Blades Quest which was the first multi-server mega-quest, etc) to playing. And in playing, I got to see and do things you cannot do in other persistent world projects. Shey started life in Skullport … then moved to The Frozen North. After leaving Jain’n in Lonelywood, she came to live at the Promenade in Skullport again before moving to stay in ThePirate Isles for awhile. After the Pirate Isles, she lived outside of Silverymoon while she and Higgy negotiated with Alustriel. When the war of the Spider Queen started up, she moved back to her origin city of Ched Nasad, and when Ched Nasad was destroyed, she moved to Menzoberranzan. And when politics turned against her in Menzoberranzan, she slipped away to Selgaunt in Sembia. And of course, during all of this, she made various forays to several different layers of the abyss.

Skullport
Lonelywood in the Frozen North
The Pirate Isles
The Silvermarches
Ched Nasad
Menzoberranzan
The Abyss
Selgaunt, Sembia

Where else could one online-NWN PC visit all these locations in an open, hard-core RP environment? Where else could Shey's story have happened? Only in ALFA I say. Only in ALFA.

So, let me close with this …

Thank you ALFA.

To Burt: Thank you for Pharun, the most interesting characterI ever killed in ALFA, and probably the *only* one Shey ever regretted killing.
Always a pleasure. :(

Seriously though, Pharaun was among my most favourite characters. While I like to think that was purely because of my own genius - I have to recognise that the players, characters and DMs had a massive influence on him. So in the spirit of hijacking...

Magonushi: For playing Vedo, the mentor, at-times predictable zealot and eventual 'brother'. I liked to think that he always had Pharaun's best interests at heart...which probably just means he was shrewder than he looked.

Zak: For being an infuriatingly devoted priestess of Lolth who caused no end of headaches with her rhetoric.

Holy_Rage: For playing Tergrash, who I consider to be one of the finest dwarves (note: duergar) I've ever encountered in game, and for being the closest thing Pharaun had to a friend, despite the occasional treachery.

Mikayla: Much as I hate to stroke your hideously bloated ego, Sheyreiza was one of the few people Pharaun considered an (intellectual) equal, and generally the only person who could (and did) throw a spanner into his machinations. When Pharaun had to make the choice between fleeing to the surface or returning to Ched, I suspected the outcome of the latter option would not be fortuitous for him. Shey fulfilled those expectations - and how.

Ravin: For the excellent cyb...I mean, DMing, of course. It was always fun to have some alternative plots to pursue.

Vendrin: I can hardly echo Mikayla's sentiments enough. The war of the spider queen was one of the most epic quests I've had the pleasure to partake in. The effort you put into it was outstanding - I am only sorry that Mikayla ruined everything by murdering me before I got to see it come to a head.

Thanks so much, the feeling is mutual. This same addiction is why I lured you back in the first place.

The once long-quiet Lonelywood erupting into violent jealous spasms was some of the best times Ive had gaming. The fact that Muse wove all that into the story like it was meant to happen was pretty damned nice too. Im sad to remember that game in the same way Im sad to get to the end of a good book, proving it was much more valuable than a game.

Rather than thank you for that past though, thanks for coming back and playing Lotus with the cult.

Wow Mik...you make my own memories rush forward, and there are so many they begin to get lost with the sands of time.

Bannock the Helmite who played mostly Sembia...
Oxoi Soulcleaner, unrespectable dwarf, this one traveled more than any other and was as close as I ever got to challenging wealth standards...
Selmoen, Moonknight...
Trisa, cut short...

...and Eskuril Starhalls, my first best PC. Duck, GF, Wynna, and Raifith were just a few folks on that campaign. Even the legendary assassin Mashan Tain played a small part. It started on the very first night of live back in April 2002. This is the tale of Eskuril's greatest adventure, and mine:
Spoiler:
My story begins with a group of students, Eskuril and Raifith from the University, off to meet with a fellow student. He had something to show them, but was found murdered in his home. The grief-stricken friends searched the home for some sign of the murder or what news the friend had to share. The young cleric of Kelemvor who was with them, Dhelial, was killed there by masked men also interested in the news.

The students found a ring, a simple gold band it seemed. But seeking to know more of this ring they also found a map of an ancient crypt. During this time they gained the aid of Rugnar Ironhelm, who would come to be a priest of the Soulforger. Also at this time they learned that the map and ring had belonged to Lord Fenton, and it was in his home that the ring and the map would be of use, for under his old manor is where the crypt would be found. The drow also began to stalk the companions, for reasons they yet knew not, even into their bedrooms. Eskuril to this day will point you to the stain on his floor where the drow invading his home met their fate.

Kohan, freed from a life of slavery by his own hand, joined the band as the companions went into the crypts below the mansion. Many undead did they find there as well as a massive skeleton, guardian of a journal. Though many nearly fell for the last time, the ring tamed the guardian and the Journal was reclaimed.

The Journal contained two stories, one a recipe and the other private notes of Childs, an elven servant of the Fenton family.

Many Centuries ago, Lord Fenton of the Council of Nine conspired with the drow Cult of the Damned to fashion a rod with great power over the undead, the notes to its construction in the Journal. The ritual was more than expected though, capturing the soul of a priest of Myrkul who assisted and a shard of the old god of the dead. The rod was now alive, and possessed of terrible power. Lord Fenton knew what he had created, and refused to hand it to the drow. They killed him and his family, but never found the rod. It had been hidden away by Childs, and all traces to its location similarly concealed.

Thus began a long search for Childs, or news of him. Much time was spent in official records and conversing with other elven folk who might have been around at the time and might have some tale related to the events. Vera Torlann joined the companions, as did Kataney Brinn. Kullan Glendor priest of Mystra joined the Companions at the behest of Lady Sarai. However, Rugnar Ironhelm fell away from his companions and was not heard from again, his hammer still not put to rest.

The Companions eventually discovered the existence of an elf that knew Childs and the tale of the rod, though they did not share his name with me. The elf was stricken with the news that this old curse had come alive again and was loathe to reveal what he knew, but reveal he did before fleeing Silverymoon forever. He told that the rod had been hidden away in the depths of Castle Stethan, a keep from the ancient days, and that the path to its halls was held in secret by the Circle of Silver.

The Circle was learned to be a Circle of Druids in the Moonwood, though the Companions knew not how to get word to them or beg their assistance. However, the Companions stumbled across an ancient, one of the founding members of the Circle even before the city of Silverymoon came to be. He agreed to gather the Circle to hear the plea of the companions. And so the Companions came before the Circle in their grove in the Moonwood.
It was an unsettling time for the companions, for the Circle was of two minds – should they assist the Companions, or kill them that what they knew may be buried again in the sands of time? The Companions would be tested. First, a test of commitment and character which they passed. Next, a test of courage. The companions were made to slay two-headed giants killing wantonly in the wood. This they did, and fortunate as well to escape serious injury. The last test though was a test of wisdom, to find a perfect example of nature.

Though they were not sure how, the Companions convinced the Circle of their wisdom and were shown the path to Castle Stethan wherein lay the Rod of Myrkul.

The Companions faced their biggest challenge. Not only that, but their best fighters were nowhere to be seen; Kohan imprisoned in Everesk and Rugnar long departed, Vera not heard from in many tenday. Grim-faced they dreaded the challenge that had to be met. The drow were becoming more bold, openly venturing into the domain of the Circle and killing many druids in their search for the rod. Time was not on their side. Just in time however, they met a half-orc, Bash’r of Tempus, who agreed to go with the Companions to the Castle. And so they set out – Bash’r, Eskuril, Raifith, Kataney, and Kullan, to succeed or die.

The path was first a tunnel that went to the grotto in front of the castle. Scalyfolk were found there and in the first few levels of the castle – kobolds, Lizardmen, and Yuan-ti. The courtyard was a killing field with kobolds on the battlements. The Companions pressed on through to the Main Hall. In the library on that level they found another journal left by Childs, describing hidden passages and the residents of the dungeons – vampires. As well, the fact that Childs would find his final resting place there.

Through lower levels the Companions fought, slaying scalyfolk where they encountered them eventually finding their way to the dungeons, though not before Kohan rejoined the troupe. Other creatures were found below…more undead, fire-breathing rats, and beasts from the elemental planes. Hoping in vain it would not be so, one of the vampires confronted the Companions. They did battle with the blood-sucker, wounding it grievously forcing it to retreat. The next level down they met the ghost of Childs, yet maintaining his vigil warding the rod against the vampires who sought it so desperately.

Childs had placed the rod in a magical brazier of flame where the vampires could not touch it. Childs allowed the rod to pass into the possession of the Companions, who placed it into a container as to touch it would be to give one’s mind over to the spirit held within.
On their retreat from the Castle however the Companions were confronted with the vampires mate who demanded the blood of a Companion to let the others pass. Even as Kullan volunteered to make the ultimate sacrifice, one of the Companions let slip that the rod was reclaimed, and the vampire became incensed demanding the rod immediately or all would perish. Eskuril possessed the rod, and with heavy heart told that Kullan had the rod and ran leaving Kullan to a most grisly fate.

The Lady of Mysteries smiled on her priest that day though. Kullan did battle with the vampire, suffering many terrible wounds. Nearing death, he made one last desperate call to Mystra to banish the creature. The divine power touched him, and he backed the creature into the lava on the lowest level.

The Companions retreated, making their way to Silverymoon and Lady Sarai in the Temple of Mystra. Hesitantly the Companions turned over the rod, uncertain whether Lady Sarai would try to save the rod or assist in its destruction. Lady Sarai sought guidance from the Goddess, who to the relief of the Companions ordered the rod destroyed. And so it came to pass or so the Companions were told, with powerful mages from all of Faerun summoned to destroy the rod and banish the godling within, the Lady of Mysteries herself even leading the ritual.

And so let us give applause to the heroes, the Companions of the Rod who kept this terrible artifact out of the hands of the drow who would no doubt use its evil against this fair city: Raifith, Kataney, Vera, Kohan, Bash’r, the late Rugnar and Dhelial, and Sir Eskuril Starhalls, Knight of the Order of the Silver Heart by the hand of Lady Alustriel who led the Companions through this great quest, and whose words give this story to me and thus to you.

Wow, Fluff, that was quite the campaign now having read it over. I forgot all the twists. I must confess that I think you retell it much better than the scraps of paper that littered my desk as it unfolded. I must also confide that when you entered that keep I thought I had tuned the encounters to be too tough given the real time nature of NWN, thinking the party just might wipe before they reached the bottom of that castle. Dungueon crawls rock, but they seem so much better when there is a compelling story to give it purpose. The thing that surprised me about that campaign is that I was writing it a week or two ahead of where you all were, reacting to your decisions, and it turned out quite well. Thanks for being the protagonists. Thanks also for not trying to use that rod ;)

I especially want to thank Electryc for everything he did with Sembia over the years. As a player, Oni Kobayashi was a blast to play there for more than 4 years under "E". And as a former HDM of The Pirate Isles it was always fun to try and work cross-server plots with "E" between the only really active neutral/evil servers ALFA had above ground. The level of player scheming against one another that rarely ever crossed into CvC made Sembia imho and is something ALFA in NWN2 is missing. For ALFA to be balanced, she needs a dirty underbelly

Thanks for all the fun,

Kate

Hrmmm...

I have had disjointed adventures with NWN1, going from being dmed once in a blue moon and logging in just for the awesome rp, to be dmed almost everday. In essence, plugging in was always a bit difficult, but I had hours upon hours of funness.

My thanks....

To Kevin Coronac, Mr. Longhorn and associates of Shadowdale. Adventure always awaited, even though we were DMless. A special Applause to Kevin, Torontu's travelling companion from Shadowdale, Sembia, and The Pirate Iles. As well to Darugith's Nicki and Mr. Shieldjack, both of whom I remember vividly in TPI.

To Lou and Al, who kept Namalen company on many a night in Northern Cormyr. It was a great pleasure to play with Elrien, to be introduced to the druid's circle, and to help build a lasting part of that server IC.

To Miz, who kept constant vigilance on Daggerdale, and who really introduced me to what DM interaction on a regular basis can do and build. To Ewayneself, whose Paladin of Nobanion was an inspiriation on how to play a severe clash/melding of culture. To Misty, because Laurelin was just that cool. To Ogregrim, the poet who made me laugh out of game with antics that were hilarious. To Aitana, for the tent...and the lurves. Killthorne, whose barbarian was awesome goodness. To pyscho leo...for the imprisonment, and the eye.

To the Bill Vinceti, who befriended an otherwise friendless Sarian.

To Jaydemoon...even though I didn't get Jaydeloot...I got a stone to immortalize Tarrent.

Aerthin, Maxcell, Heegz. May the oas rest quietly. Covet...you reeled me into this Pw, Aerthin, you plugged me in. Without those two, I would not be in ALFA.

THere are many more to thanks, Starlainya for the NC fun, Miz for the SD fun...many many good memories. I never had a PC that lasted too long...but I think that played into my favor, as I would not have gotten to play with so many extraordinary rpers if I had.

Goodnight servers, sleep well.

Thanks folks for highlighting/reminding us what the ALFA experience can offer creative RPers. I want point to all the above (especially the details offered by Myk and a couple others) and encourage newcomers to ALFA to expand their scope of what can be accomplished and experienced here.

And I echo what someone else said; all the veterans who haven't jumped into ALFA2 need to get ingame!

@ Morbidkate's post:

Your post echos my thoughts almost perfectly. Sembia was a huge part of 2 of my favorite characters development and shaping from one of my original characters Dran Kane and his introduction to the temple of Cyric to Samir's eventual conversion to my favorite god Malar, Sembia always had a nice cold spot in my heart. What really made the server for me apart from the fantastic players that seemed to be drawn there was possibly the greatest dm ever to pick up the wand: Electryc. Many a night was gleefully wasted with the aftermath of an epic plot proposed by E. Not only did his plots leave me thinking about future possibilities for my characters to pursue but he also gave me the most freedom with my characters choices. If it was possible to do, Electryc would see it happen. From bird calls to distract elves before their slaughter, to scaling rooftops to spy on people anything and everything was possible. My only complaint would be that the old coot lives in America and is hard for me to catch at times! HA! Alfa always needed that place where Evil had just that little bit of an edge to flourish and Sembia always provided that. Which in turn led to greater plots and back stabbing from its glorious player base all in the name of fun and evil. Mad props must be given to the dm team as a whole to allow their server to be so drastically changed by the actions of a few dedicated players that dared to dream and succeed grandly. Although later changed back to a more cannon approach of the city I shall always fondly remember the days when the Black Sun flew proudly over the walls of Selgaunt and the Iron Throne had more power in its deep pockets then most company's could dream for. To me good cannot survive without evil and Sembia as a whole gave alfa its much needed dose of evil.

I will give a few special mentions as well in this post, just to help inflate some egos. Always a good thing. In no real order:-

-Burt: I cannot describe how much you piss me off with your childish good looks and boyish charm :P But seriously as a dm you have a habit of creating amazingly powerful stories that have a nasty habit of sticking with me like a rash i picked up in vietnam, as a player your casual tomfoolery in ooc chat mixed with the rp finesse of a 80 yr old Tolkien is always a pleasure. Tho you have a habit of making amazingly annoying characters I shall never forget our adventure across 1/2 of the western heartlands slaughtering incorrectly named peons all in the name of shits and giggles.

-fade`: If your still around drop us a line you mook, ever night sitting and rping waiting for a dm to come and enact one of our crazy schemes was a night well spent. Your characters where horrifyingly well roll played and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that you had been locked up for some sort of mass murder/ attempted suicide in real life. You have an amazing knack for evil and you are no doubt sorely missed if you are no longer apart of alfa. Pure role play inspiration.

-Vendrin: Brother V where do i start? I have noticed that you are still around in alfa and are no doubt balls deep in some sort of amazingly complex and overly uber plot spanning months if not years of play with far reaching and earth shattering consequences. It is great to see that you are still apart of alfa and I know that if/when I decide to come back you will be my first port of call for loot and XPZ.

-Electryc: Voted Best Dm in alfa for a reason, you sir are truthfully amazing. From the simplest of plots to the epic plane shifting world changing plot you can do it all and seem to be able to do it with little to no real effort on your part! (I kid i know how much blood you gave up for most of your plots!) Its always a good time when your in control of the wand an I seriously hope you have a pc thats capable of running nwn2, if not im tempted to send you one as a gift for the awesome plots you created!

-Glassrain: You pessimistic noob of pure epic failure. I shall always morn the day you decided to give up the greatest character ever in order to create a pussy Paladin! Although we had our lovers tiffs over plot direction Dming beside you on Neverwinter was perhaps my high point of my entire Alfa career, an im still ashamed that i never got to finish Lyons plot with you perhaps if we meet for a beer someday I will tell you just what I had planned for young Lyon and his brother Kjorn.

-Lou: Special mention to you as well Lou even though i know you wont read this! Was always a pleasure dming you and you let me flow freely with my more... interesting ideas. Was a great shame that I never got to finish the plot that i started with you either but never the less it was always a great time as a dm to log on and see you rping even tho you where the only one on the server!

Theres so many more people but i cant be arsed carrying on. Perhaps ill add to this post later...

Heh. Always nice to know you got a fan. Sometimes it makes you want to come back and dm again. Even if you don't think you have any stories left to offer.

Either way.... ALFA/NWN1 is probably the only game I've invested years of my life too. It's like and old girlfriend, that was never quite the one. Something that had to end eventually, your sorry to see go, and will always remember fondly.

I'd give out my thanks, but my players know how I feel about them. The players have always been what have inspired me to DM, and I'm sorry I can't form that connection with every ALFA member, but to those I have, thanks to you, for giving me an outlet for so many different emotions you can't always express in real life.

Boy, where do I start? There are far too many people to remember and thank for all the unsurpassed experiences NWN1 & ALFA gave me. The best I can do is mention the folks that stand out the most in my memory and beg forgiveness from anyone I've forgotten.

Ayergo: Gaeden von Tharin was one of the most empathic PCs I ever had the good fortune to encounter. You also ran Waterdeep itself with a steady hand until it closed its doors, leading Kalev from one misadventure to another in the process. Torm as my witness, someday I'll get my revenge for all those Waterdeep Herald articles.

Hialmar: Je ne sais pas comment vous remercier. If it hadn't been for you, Kalev may never have found the Third Circle and his calling in life. Hell, if it weren't for you he'd probably have joined the long list of dead Baldur's Gate first PCs without realizing his potential. From our adventures in Waterdeep to standing shoulder-to-shoulder at the final battle of the Loudwater War, je vous remercie de tout coeur.

Mick: Loxy was one of the few characters I regret not getting to know as well as I could have. We crossed paths too many times to count over the course of her life and it was always an experience and a half.

Misty: From Laele, to Triel, to Laurelin; you had this consistent talent for being a thorn in Kalev's side, lol. You've always played with heart and feeling and I don't think there's a single person here your characters didn't leave a lasting impression on (provided you crossed paths). It is my greatest hope that I'll see one of your creations again in NWN2 someday.

NickD: Soppie was the den mother of the Long Road. Her shrine to Yondalla near Triboar is one of the warmest places I remember and there was always something going on that she had her hand in - for better or worse.

PensiveWetness: Sadly, of all the folks here, I think I've known you the longest, lol. From pre-ALFA days of adventuring with the Pink Clan across the Vast to our ever-bizarre encounters in ALFA itself - I've never met a player with more unique characters than yours. Whether or not that's a good thing is still to be determined ;) Take care of yourself airman, until we cross paths again.

Rotku: Merissa Miller; man what a piece of work she was. Running for mayor of Red Larch, joining the Wayfarers, our adventure to Neverwinter and the drow trial, her falling in love with Narimer then mourning his death and bearing his child, facing off against the Wayfarers' fall from grace, the disappearance of her child and its subsequent taint by the lower planes. I'm not sure how it happened, but Merissa's life is one of the ones I remember best off the top of my head. Good on you for that.

The Long Road Wayfarers: I can't remember all the players that had a hand in this group, much as I wish I could. Narimer, Merrissa, Soppie, Kit; everyone who ever was a part of this organization: thank you. You made me come back time and again, putting up with the aeons of walking TLR demanded, just to take part in your reindeer games.

Vendrin: Bet you're surprised to see your name here, eh? Heh, I had to at least thank you for making the one and only evil PC who ever stood a chance of undermining Kalev's morals. You have a knack for thinker villains and I hope that never changes.

Then of course there are the DM teams. I'd especially like to thank the Waterdeep, Long Road, Loudwater, and Shadowdale teams from 2004-2009. You folks had the best of the best among your numbers and no simple thank you could ever cover how much I appreciate the work you did and the memories you gave me. NWN may have been just a medium for an imaginary life we could all live, but damn it, they were our imaginary lives and you helped made them worthwhile.

damart, mateusz, illialid, rumple, nickD and the godfather (DM borgia)

then

the above plus, frosty, 'the boy', kalev, PW, rotku, stormy twins, keryn, rusty, sandman

then

the above plus rusty, mick, evro (DM), indio (DM)

for 4+ years, Dorn of the SKypony then Kit Gyrfalcon* Champion of the Order of the Red Falcon (Red Knight) (and martyr.....yes they love titles them redknighter were brought to life by the interactions with these and many more to who's GSIDs my mind cannot remember. TLR and LW ftw

I'll remember the angst of Dorn turning against Greoa, the saving of Moreta the ancient gold, the facing down of chaunteas chosen, the slaying of the great white bittersweet with the loss of so many friends, and Dorns last rage-filled and fearless charge into endless orcs battlecry on his lips as he arrived in uthgars halls to pride of place. Kits weary pride as the beaten down but resolute defenders of Loudwater again turned away undefeatable odds, the spurned tempation, and his glory as the Red Knight herself came for him as the Beastlord took his offered body as a new 'home' in a bargain to turn on the princes of shadow and save the delymbr.

Damn i had fun.

luckily i'm still having fun!

*PS - if someone builds loudwater there's a statue that needs building!!! ;)

Playing in Skullport with Moilir and the rest of the crew was always one of my favorite player moments in ALFA, despite the shake ups with DMs getting punted left and right and all that noise.
