Unless the player had puppet-mode turned off (and AI on), the AFK auto-follower will not end up engaging in combat. If the bear jumps onto him/her first, any damage you do to the bear will take immediate threat and have the creature peel off onto you.
My guild mates in the numerous MMOs I have played often put me on auto-follow, knowing that I hate it over anything else. I often run them off cliffs or get them stuck on terrain until the auto-follow auto-breaks for being too far off, or their characters die from the falls. Sadly, ALFA does not have such potential (for the most part).

Forget autofollow -- what we really need IG is a feature that lets you know when another player is typing (like a little icon appearing or the toon glows or something) so that you can avoid stepping on other player's lines. As someone like JLM who can't type very well or very fast, a feature like this would improve my RP considerably. [hijack over]

Its pretty easy to tell when someone is speaking or done speaking if everyone:
1) Speaks one simple phrase per line
2) Terminates each line with more to follow with ...
3) Ends each sentence with punctionation
So you see...
That would end up with...
A conversation much like this one.

Riot and I discussed this IG some days ago and I intend to give it a shot. It is an elegant solution if we can all get on task with it (still stumbling with it IG myself, mind you )

My main reason / excuse for using autofollow is the fact that PCs lose their routing if another creature gets in between them and their goal. Especially in larger groups it becomes impossible to just click far ahead and then type your conversation, as after a few yards your character will decide that they no longer know where they're going.

Oh MAN! whut he said, dude! I wish I had a third arm so I could keep clicking where I'm going while trying to type in a group movement situation. It's frustrating as hell.
<paazin> Elves I bet are kinda fun to play.
<BH|werksux> I prefer the trumpet or clarinet
<BH|werksux> elves wiggle too much

I agree with this statement and stick to it, mostly. Unless my PC is telling a story specifically, his responses are one to two sentences maximum. I normally mix in a lot of emotes for lack of quick clicking for avatar movements, but these rules work wonders.

I generally try to use Riot's convention as well, and it works great one on one, I find the problem more with RP in a group of 4 or more. A "OGR is typing" indicator as with some real time chat programs would help in those instances IMO.
