memory lanes (old servers...)

Post by PensivesWetness »

The great days of The Vast Swamp! Old school NC1! NW!

BG...

when i started playing on ALFA full time back in late '04 i started there in the middle of the road on Baldur's Gate. those huge ass valley's took my breath away (so did soiling myself seeing Render's, giants and whut not off the trails)...

i'd love to play those servers again. how do i go about getting a copy of the map? is asking even proper (considering the mod's include all the bare bones of how ALFA and it's haks work, i figure a No is coming my way)?

or is it? what's the story on such requests? permissiable? even possible? would hak roll-backs be required?

thoughts? ideas? pimp slaps? or are you worried that a Lvl-40 DEATH-HALFLING would desecrate the memories of your wonderful and much missed modules? :?

If my current work on WD is any precedent, you'd take the module, check with current servers/HDMs to see if they have adopted areas from that server (NC contains a significant portion of BG now, and Sembia contains parts of TPI, for example), let the DMA know what you're up to (you might have to get added to the DM usergroup to get access to the DM FTP, where all of ALFA's downed modules are currently stored, usually with the last few live versions), bring that server up to standards, find yourself a host, and prod the DMA to ask if it can be a live server again.

Which is to say, yes, we would be worried about horribly mispriced gear and level 40 death halflings, but any new team adopting a server would certainly have the option of fixing those things.

Unless you mean to ask if someone else will bring up Neverwinter or Baldur's Gate in NWN1, in which case the answer is no. :P

....i just wanted to play on a copy of those servers when i go on deployment, not run a server (there's the presumtion that i'm smart enough to even do that, love   )

*looks to mikayla for this* maybe i should have asked 'When do the server modules become public domain'?

That would probably be up to our admin, and I'd wager they'd consider the thoughts of the content's creators, if they were still about, and whether the content had been adopted to live servers.

We may not have a copy of it, even. Some of the ancient ones were lost long ago. Otherwise, though, we've been pretty open about sharing them... the catch is they all use old haks and you'd need to do any conversion yourself.
People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.

I've got the old NC1 and Arabel mods, from before the 3.0 haks... it's just tricky to find the right vintage of haks to make them work again. If anyone has a burning need to explore the old high-risk high-reward version, I could look into 7-zip'ing up the pair of them, but the hak search would be nontrivial, we had a lot of oddly named haks before Murky's 3.0 cleanup.

I had some of the old servers and most of the old haks.....there around here somewhere

Always inersting to see how inventive the early builders were before a plethora of tilessets, models and scripts existed

I'm pretty sure I still have a copy of NWN1 server 052, Baldur's Gate. It's from when I stepped down as HDM in '05. I'm pretty sure I saved the haks as well.

I could make this available for download, just let me know (admin email me).

Actually, I just had an idea about this.

If anyone wants to make a single player mod (or mods) using a May '05 version of the NWN1 Baldur's Gate server, I'd be happy to provide a copy for such a cause. Again, email me if there is any interest.
