Sorry GF I like you, your DMing and your PCs, but ALFA has needed moderating on its Forums since before Live.

maybe it's time to move on after all?

It's not that bad without moderating, Bill. I doubt GF is totally against moderation.
THIS level of moderation, however, is way too much. Do you honestly think we need some of the strictest on the net? In any human discourse, people are going to get feeling hurt and noses. If we try to protect ourselves from even that, the real victim becomes the discourse. I've had quite a few people take runs at me on the forums and a battery of very negative things said publically and on the DM level boards. Yeah, the moderation may have prevented it from being said but not for being thought or acted upon. If people want to make an arse out of themselves, short of the extreme, they should. It quickly reflects more on them.
That said, GF may have been motivated to run over this issue but its far from all he brings. He's a brilliantly inspired DM, writer, networked like a server to the NWN community and has great temperment for the job. Demson has alot of ideas and I'm sure most are good but they're also largely a natural progression. GF's done the job before and knows this community very well. That should really count for alot. No disrespect towards Demson intended.

Nah, that was just tasteless. I asked Ven to remove the overly graphic pic showing the death of a cyclist and the serious injury of 10 others merely for giggles. He replaced it with the "retard joke".Vaelahr wrote:Kate, you can't even tolerate a retard joke.

I felt like a monster reincarnation of Horatio Alger. A man on the move... and just sick enough to be totally confident." -- Raoul Duke.
Gallows humor is pretty common in my world. People who deal with death and human misery for a living learn to laugh at it real quick. I laughed at Ven's pic, so did my wife. Sheepishly, but she laughed.
I think a simple "keep it in OT" rule would suffice. You could even have a "contentious topics" forum where hot button topics get sent to for moderation, while still allowing discussion. Basically there are many ways to improve the situation without going over the deep end.

OTOH, excessive static driving S:N to useless levels can also effectively censor legitimate discourse, but I don't think GF's talking about allowing DNS attacks via the 'submit' button ;)

Seriously, you aren't equating forum moderation of a gaming community with apathy toward Hitler and the Nazis? I hope you are kidding.Fionn wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came...
Noone is denying anyone a vote or an opinion, if expressed respectfully. What the moderators are targeting is the excessive rudeness and outright vulgarity that makes the forums a hostile environment. How about some constructive feedback about what the ought to be moderated? It will always be subjective, but offer up some recommended guidelines. Start with the low-hanging fruit like racism or homophopia that should never be tolerated, voting which must never be taken away, and work toward the gray area where moderators can rely on some sort of litmus test to guide their review.

I think a few people are missing the point with all these "extremes"...
It's not "freedom" VS "Carebear hippie commune"
It is this simple.
Every member of ALFA should expect their leadership to maintain civility.
If the moderation fails, I am done. I will still help NC and BG...but that will be it.
How many others will GF run out by attempting to remove something that a large group has desired for a long time? How many more ALFAns will lose faith that the forums can be cleaned up?
GF you have done a great deal for the community, but I fear you are choosing a losing team by joining the "anti-moderation" group. A policy to remove the moderation efforts does no good for the community, it only allows a vocal minority to continue to treat fellow ALFAns and potential new members in a fashion that is counter productive.
What good will really come of going back to the way things were?

Mike, we've far from the strictest on the net. I'd ask you do examine the moderation actually done and not just question the policy of moderation - the intent never was to create a unit of gestapo and I'm fully satisfied that our moderators have been reasonable, mature and worthwhile choices.MShady wrote:THIS level of moderation, however, is way too much. As far as 'negative' things being said, that's absolutely fine. Criticisms are appreciated, so long as they are constructive and civil. If someone is looking to simply flame others, they should look elsewhere

People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.
They did it with my consent.Grand Fromage wrote:I did. Unfortunately the mods did not respect my wishes, but no surprise. That being said, the thread has not been moderated heavily at all - the few posts that were deleted were done so before your request to not moderate it. I'm more than willing to let out some slack, but if people abuse it, once again it will be moderated.

GF already said he wasn't going to get rid of moderation completley, he said he would get rid of the gestapo way of doing it, and get a different system. How many others will GF run out by attempting to remove something that a large group has desired for a long time? How many more ALFAns will lose faith that the forums can be cleaned up?
