As I said, I plan to make a hybrid. It will incorporate the three main crafting skills, gathering components, and having recipes. It is more detailed than what is in the DMG in some ways and simpler in others. It will include aspects of the system, expanding here and cutting back there.
The game we have here does not fit the DMG in some areas so we have to do a best fit. Also, you have to incorporate the cultural aspects, guilds, licensing, and economy.
The DMG is designed for a living physical DM to make on the spot tweaks (or follow a module) and make judgement calls. A scripted system cannot make on the fly changes or assume the dynamics of player interaction.
That is the best I can do.

The vanilla crafting system designed by OE depends on crafting feats for magic items. Craft magical weapons and armor and craft wondrous items require caster level 5.Zelknolf wrote: I understand the "there're no item creation feats in the APM or our game engine right now" angle, but creating magic items is definately the domain of spellcasters.

It's not that people don't want crafting or are not willing to support you. But if we are to have crafting in ALFA and need to create a different system than what's shipped with the game, it has to be an improvement . Making it possible for everyu class to craft magic weapons, despite the DC is not an improvement IMO.

Se'rie Arnimane: Time is of the essence!
Nawiel Di'malie: Shush! we're celebrating!
I very much like Mayhem's idea of having some repeatable static quest that allow characters to use their crafting skills, where they get some gold and a small amount of XP for assisting (perhaps the amount of XP being what they roll for their crafting check? Or at least variable according to their skill check roll), but not getting any actual item at the end.
Not exactly the same as crafting, but it gives some use to the crafting skills and no reasonable person could complain about it being crafting.

There's a difference between "not getting any support for a crafting system"LancasterX_2 wrote:Give it up Rick. It doesn't look like you're getting much support. Not worth it, just build WD.
and "not gettign any support for a crafting system that totally ignores the standard rules for magical item creation."
As a mundane system it looks pretty neat.

Brokenbone: Yes, the approved proposal you linked is indeed the product of the CTC team. It is designed around the 3.5 rules, developed by a team that fluctuated between 4 and 8 people hand-picked by the DMA at the time to make a crafting system for ALFA that could be implemented into scripts.
I had no idea it was ever actually approved, hurray for red tape.
EDIT: After reading the approval thread, i noticed some slanderous comments against me in there. I deny any accusations of insulting the HDMs and refusing their input. I did insult the HDMs when they gave me feedback, i asked for clarifiers, and went multiple months without hearing back on the clarifiers.
The HDMs sent in a list of things they did not like, without explaining any reasoning behind it, which makes it very difficult to adjust.
The entire time I was on the team was an uphill struggle trying to get input from anyone but one or two people involved, and when i could finally get someone to comment on it they would just tear apart anything the team had been working on, and continue not giving input.
And the whole way up that hill, I was working as the spearhead of the project, without the aid of the CTC Chair because he was more involved with the caravan system and didnt care about crafting.
So, in my defense, yes things got ugly, but only because I was being consistently ignored by those I required input from.

Gotcha Amar.
Still, if the system is just "sitting there" all written up, a new Admin team (and as applicable, HDMs) could bless it again... bad blood or whatever of two years ago aside. A lot of faces'll have changed since then anyhow.
