If someone has earned strikes but not three to warrant a perma-ban they should be allowed to vote like everyone else.Magonushi wrote:What about members who have earned strikes? Are they upstanding members of the community?
I think that Fluff is right about the hope that overall numbers should overpower the trolls who don't participate in anything whatsoever besides forum and/or Irc asshattery.

ALFA is not a large community, only a couple hundred or so, definitely small enough for a true democracy to be effective. This is especially true in that we are an entirely online community. A few measures would need to be implemented to prevent ballot box stuffing trolls though.
1) Off-forum voting. Polls would not suffice.
2) Voter Registration. Gamespy ID and the short key would be required to vote. these can then be cross-checked against ineligible voter lists (banned players). These blacklists are publicly available.
3) Semi-annual registration. This helps to keep active participants in the voting process.
Aside from this, a week for self nominations, a week of campaigning, and a week of voting would seem reasonable.

How do you know how many strikes you earn? I should have at least 100 by now.

We've got 4300 "forum members" best I can tell (bots included), but consistently have less than 50 people actually voting for PA, and normally less than 35 for all other roles. Different a couple of years ago, saw some very large numbers of votes in cases, but that was then, this is now.
I haven't the foggiest how one'd come up with some specialty solutions with GSIDs / public keys, revalidation frequency, etc. Sounds like a load of work, maybe on the webpage (if that's still where key data is stored), for IA to put mind to. Cost/benefit, do we really expect past members to come back just for elections? Hasn't happened in PA elections that I know of, but anyhow, fair minded idea.

Have a special voting server, where players have to log in with their current character and pull a lever.
That way, only folks who are actively playing can get a vote, and we can easily keep track of the GSID to make sure only valid members are voting and that somebody isn't voting twice.

I think opening up voting to members in good standing is a capital idea.
Mayhem's idea seems to me to have merit although I dont see a need to use your current character (I don't even have a current character). Any char/DM avatar would do as you'll have your GSID and CD keys available for all to see regardless of what you make.
I think it is fitting that a NWN/NWN2 community uses the game client(s) to vote in admin.

[22:52] <Veilan> obviously something sinister must be afoot if a DM does not have his social security number in his avatar name!

afaik we basically have a system such as this in place with the forums (a full alfa member is required to submit CD key and GSID before being able to play, iirc) so it might be a bit 'overkill' to create a unique authentication system other than what's already present for voting (not to mention, who'd want to code it up?)Brokenbone wrote:Good reform thoughts.

And, of course, the sitting PA was elected this way without any problems. I can understand the concern of only allowing people who actively play to vote, but creating all these hurdles feels like it can make voting unnecessarily cumbersome. As the hackneyed saying goes, keep it simple, stupid

People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.
