How you likin' AoC mags? I think I might need to give monthly donations to another starving MMO company, at least for a little while. In other words, is it worth its weight in dying ethopians?

I like how Ilmater is described as "Jack Tripper", moving in with Sune and Tymora. Bow chicka wow!

There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind

Does Ilmater's landlord accidentally overhear Ilmater and Sune talk about something innocuous but he interprets it in a completely inappropriate way, thus letting the comedy ensue?ayergo wrote:For those who don't want to rummage through lots of stuff, summary is here:

Garrigan DeLorre - Paladin 6 - died honorably in battle
X'Anne - Witch (Druid/Ranger mix) 4 - captured and imprisoned awaiting trial (retired)
Talon Xavaliir - Cleric 11 - living

I have just read the 4th edition rules and my conclusion is
MMO aka Warhammer online meets D&D
seems logical as the group aimed at is likely the 15year old WO player.
Mostly d&d for dummies.
the emphasis is on combat, combat and more combat. the priest spell list is a good example of this almost no rp spells at all
Its supposed to be simplified, but combat actions are still six pages as they were. they shuffled it a bit but thats all.
Skills: simplified and thus less diversity. rogue skills have been grouped under one skill.
number of feats has been tripled... more simple??
xp/levelling.. from a easy one xp table complicated many tables..
im beginning to see the need for having a laptop playing this game.
Basically for me i dont see what the impovement is compared to 3.5,but them again im likely not the target group.. 15 year old WO player..
3.5 worked fine aka just making money change

The three books that now make up the core game are enough for an enjoyable bout of hack & slash. But that's about it. To achieve anything resembling the intricacies of 3.5 we need much, much more. Prepare to shell out.
As for the Realms: I'll miss one thing above anything else. Ed Greenwood.
With Faerûn being fast-forwarded, his titbits of canon will become less and less relevant. Which is a real pity, because he can add flavour in a way no subsidiary of Hasbro would ever dare or consider lucrative enough.

I haven't PnP'd since 2e. Last couple of posts remind me of what a lot of 2e players thought of 3e. The whole ruleset in 3e appeared pretty overly dumbed down to appeal to computer RPG players to me.
And now I hear 4e has been dumbed down to appeal to the MMO players and doesn't match up to the "intricacies of 3.5". In ~10 years time they'll be saying 5e has been too dumbed down for the next generation of players and lacks the complexities of 4e.

Yep. All bitching, no substance, just like last time. D&D will continue.NickD wrote:I haven't PnP'd since 2e. Last couple of posts remind me of what a lot of 2e players thought of 3e. The whole ruleset in 3e appeared pretty overly dumbed down to appeal to computer RPG players to me.

And, Witch, a simplification of the combat system was necessary. A high level party fighting one encounter with a shadow dragon took us more than 4 hours in the 3.5 rules. And my mates know the rules inside out, no nonsense arguing over rule interpretation or anything like that, only die-modification calculation, distance calculations and board movement, spell casting and die rolling.
3.5 was filled with good intentions, but in reality was an unwieldy beast. Also, I agree with Amar and GF, the stale broth that is FR could do with a bit of mucking around with.
