Vault Testing: Banning the Chaotic Evil Barbarians from ALFA

Post by Hialmar »

I think that a lot of people around here remember the dreaded CEBs.

For the others here is the problem: sometimes, when there was a network glitch between the server you played on and the central server which manages the shared server vault (which stores the character files), character files get corrupted.
When this happened instead of your favorite PC you only saw a chaotic evil barbarian (CEB for short or Chaotic Evil Barbie for fun).
When you saw that, you were out of luck. You needed to find a HDM and cross your fingers that there was a not too old vault backup that contained your character. You always lost at least one day of playing and more if you couldn't contact an HDM fast.

We are trying to solve this problem for NWN2 ALFA (and then maybe for NWN1 ALFA as well as a side effect).

What can you do to help ?
You can test the vault connection on our 2 NWN2 beta servers: Western Heartland and Baldur's Gate.

What you have to do is simple: log on one server, move from one area to another (enter a shop for example), log out, log on the other server, move from one area to another and so on.
If at some moment you see a CEB instead of your character, please post here with the exact time (and your time zone) this happened, your GSID and what server you were last on (ie the one you just logged out from) and the one you were trying to join.

Thanks a lot.

BG still has some problems connecting to the vault but you can still test the connection between Western Heartlands and the central vault.

Yay, gladly :)

I'm sure many of us remember the hassles of logging in while this was in effect
People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.

Not to mention that CEBs toasted the server, too, crashing it on your attempts at connection. Thanks to anybody who reports any instantaneous PC conversions in class and alignment to the dreaded CEB. And thanks Hialmar for proactively working to fix this for NWN2.
Enjoy the game

Everything should now be ok for the testing.

You might have problems with the quarantine but you can still modify your inventory (equip items and such) and then logout and log back on the previous server.

We had some problems with the caches but I hope that they are solved now.

If someone can test that everything is okay that's cool.

I'll test this evening when I'm back from work.
