Not every player is concerned with combat-stats to the detriment of roleplaying. And one hopes that whatever hack is applied to make shortspears will leave them in a condition that all the aforementioned feats still work.

The shortspear/shield is a *classic* weapon combination, both for fighters and for warrior-clerics and all manner of monsters, and if it can be implemented in a straightforward manner, it should be made available.

In fact, I'd happily see the "longspear" lost entirely if that is what it takes to get a shortspear, since the only real advantage the longspear has over other simple weapons is Reach, something that the NWN2 engine ignores entirely.

Overly gimping combat stats *does* have a detrimental impact on roleplaying if you are roleplaying a frontline fighter. It also dramatically shortens your lifespan... but it's the second part that will matter, whether or not a hakked spear will allow feats. Sounded like it wouldn't.

And I agree I'd gladly give up the standard spear for a one-handed version, if that's what it takes to get the feats. But this is probably a change that should be polled first. ;)

Assuming base 50% hit chance, and a Damage mod of of +3, then in every 20 attacks:

Battleaxe: Hits 10 times for Avg 7.5 damage - 75hp

Short spear: Hits 10 times for Avg 6.5 damage - 65hp

Longspear with Monkey-grip: Hits 8 times for Avg 7.5 damage - 60hp.

/shrug

If its combat effectiveness you are worried about, the longspear and monkey-grip option is pretty foolish in the first place - wasting a feat to do the same damage as a battle-axe at less accuracy.

Like I said in the post, it's the feats that make the difference. It would never catch up to a battleaxe, but if you *really* want the look of spear and shield for rp purposes and also want to be able to be an effective front-line fighter, a Monkey Gripped longspear with feats wins over a featless shortspear, for a frontline straight-classed fighter. It's stating the obvious, but not everyone knows the obvious.

True enough, for example, I thought it was obvious that if the team implemetn this, they will implement feat compatability ;)
