Static Loading

That's my name for taking gobs of static quests at once and turning them in at once, or just doing statics over and over even when there's PCs on the server. Please, don't. Only take quests in an IC fashion.

Thanks!

Somewhat a shame that we have been live for barely a day and we already need to warn people to stop doing this =\

I was wondering why people kept talking to the halfling over and over again o.O I just went over to talk to him to see why everyone else was doing it.

Yeah, please don't take seeing people do that as an excuse to compete with their "efficiency". Trust me, they're going to lose out in ALFA in the long run.

Take it slow, have fun, make your time.

Well there's no way I'll be doing those quests alone, so they'll just be sitting in my journal.

Lots of new folks around Swifty, (which is a good thing). Easy for them to not have the feel of how ALFA does and doesn't do things. In either case, best to post a polite pointer here before proceeding to dropping a dozen orcs on them on their next static. Would I do that?

I was under the distinct impression those statics were non-repeatable. Was I wrong?

That sounds like a bug to me. Quests should be a one-time only thing, IMO

I remember Rick mentioning some of the statics he wrote were supposed to be repeatable.

I don't actually know if the statics were being repeated. I was just passing by the static giver at the end of my session, right before an announced reset, and happened to see a few PCs turning in handfuls of statics at once, trying to beat the reset. (Which I believe doesn't matter. Static information should be persistent through reset. Correct me if I'm wrong static writers.)

The Rivermoot quests are, generally speaking, not repeatable. There are some eccentricities of the quest system that are still being ironed out- if you find yourself getting XP for a quest you'd already completed, please inform a DM and get it sorted out.

I think the point, though- is just because a set of statics is not repeatable, is no excuse to take 3 or 4 at once. It simply doesn't make any kind of in-character sense. It's basically gaming the system for maximum rate of return, which isn't at all what ALFA is about. It's fine to accept a static, recruit others, head out, and do it, return victorious etc. How about waiting till tomorrow to do another one? Get to know some of the other PCs, or explore the surroundings instead? Taking them in rapid succession, or several at once is tantamount to strip mining or clearcutting a forest- at best, you'll run them all out and then be bored- at worst, you damage the immursion and enjoyment of all the players around you. This isn't a race, we're providing a world in which personalities and stories can grow out of these character sheets we're steering around the module- grinding on the statistics for power gain seriously detracts from that aim.

Excellently worded.

By the way this may be a bug (of no real consequence except it kinda ruins the surprise) but when you party with someone your journal is updated to all their statics. Happened to me last night.

Ahhhh... is that what happens? I was standing around last night and suddenly a quest got added to my journal even as Wynna was trying to give us a DM'd quest. I asked her about it and she new nothing of it, but there it was, in my journal, and I had no idea how it got there (I did not know about the Marhsall's static quests at that time). But that would explain it. Thanks.
