I'd be happy to DM in ALFA1 or ALFA2 or build for either, but I don't want to work under, near or anywhere around Rusty. At one point, I was even willing to HDM and build TSM/TSF and thought about other proposals, but I can't bear the effort as I know the obstacles. Instead I am running a play by post campaign with 10 players, almost 6000 hits and enjoying myself.
He's a stubborn person who does not compromise, lacks people skills and has difficulty working with a great number of his peers. He also casually and both privately and publically demeans people. The number of other DMs, players or Admin who have quit their posts or left ALFA (and now unable to vote him out) is a long list. I filed a complaint against him once and the Lead Admin quit the next day. Coincidence? I still don't think so...
So no I am not surprised Rick is now quitting, who is also the HDM of about the only ALFA2 server ready to go, over something so inane, unneccesarily and unflexible.
My own last interaction with him in chat, since we are posting went like this from the public mIRC chat, is a good example of how he treats people he does not like. All I was do was talking with other players and making no mention of anything involving him. It has all the the class of a drive by shooting...
<Rusty> best thing about MT is that you can still have CHA 8, pretend your PC is likeable, carry around sackfuls of personalised loot, and run away from any DM that challenges you ^^
<Rusty> no, usually just a cleric, but what the hell ;P
<MShady64> Any particular reason you're trying to be insulting Rusty?
<Rusty> I'm waiting for dinner/breakfast to cook. And I'm not trying; I'm succeeding.
<Rusty> Now go pretend to RP wherever it is yr hiding these days.
<MShady64> I never wanted to play on your server
<Rusty> You never want to play anywhere your precious baby might get hurt. Or forced to RP. ^^
I can understand people not liking me, per se but how classless, childish and sad is that? Insulting someone's RP and indulging in name calling? As you can all see, that's apparently how he deals with people.
This was after he forced me to stay on the server he was effectively HDM on. I had merely showed up, was ruled to be involved in a major plot and despite being able to cast a 9th level Gate spell, was mysteriously unable to leave. Even when Shade could not block such for an entire region. Rusty's verbal attack in chat was after I was finally allowed to leave Luskan after the server shut down. When the server had been down for months at a prior point, I was still not allowed to leave when other players. Why? According to a DM on his own server, when I complained about leaving he changed his mind about letting me leave. 7-8 months later as a political prisoner, I finally left.
So yes, he is unpleasant to work with and its a shame to see Rick123456789 leave. That he could frustrate a senior non-commissioned officer in the Canadian military to the point he would throw a massive amount of work is an epic lack of people skills. For all the crap Rick has got in the past unfairly, it was Rusty that drove him out as a HDM, out of ALFA and ALFA out of a server.
Put that into your perspective pipe and smoke it.
His hounding of myself, the players named in the drama over "Stat Gate" and resign/reelect me drama, which no doubt continues. It hardly ends there, believe me. I am sure he'll even attack me for daring to say anything against him.
ALFA would be much better off with Rusty quitting and Rick running his server and being a DMA. One of the two does not cause the most constant tension I have seen in ALFA.
We'd be better off without a DMA, frankly. Three out of four serving ADMINS publically stated they did not support him, which is unprecedented for those of you playing the home game. Why is it ALWAYS this same story for the last year?
A DMA without any servers is a bit redundant, is it not?
ALFA2 is now apparently going live on April 15 with no servers.
Oops.

I don't recall a long list of DMs and players who privately and publically left ALFA or won't DM because of Rick.
Do I support Rick for DMA? Not neccesarily but the current arrangement isn't exactly working.

This is f*cked.
Testing the server shows it's got a way to go. But even NWN1 servers had work to do after 4 years of live.
It's also got EASILY enough content to start RPing on with a DM.
Loot and exp drops are shown not to be in excess so early PGing is unlikely.
It even had DM/player groups lined up.
Delaying alfa servers while others build good player bases and dm cores through simple easy and quick decision making by responsible and dedicated people without formalised rules has damaged this community for years and continues to. Continual delay of NWN@ will make people look elsewhere.
I guess we'll have to unorganise tuesday nights DM session now.....
I hope something works out Rick. TSM is fantastic and a lot of ALFAns were really looking forwards to playing there soon after your hard work. I hope you are able to return.

Oh yeah, very true.
Seriously though, this is the same story. Again and again and again with Rusty. Yes, he does alot of work. That's fine.
But so do alot of other people. And when these people end up in disagreement with him, people mysteriously quit posts or disappear. Others don't want to step up and volunteer to help because of previous experience with him or afraid.
They would throw a labor of love worth hundreds of man-hours, apparently a whole team of people actually, rather then continue to work with him. That is a very profound statement to the rest of the community. For those of you who might say Rick is quitting in a snit, remember that Rusty just did the same thing 2 weeks ago. It looks like Rick might have the conviction to stand by that though, which is sad.
I think it is a factually accurate no one has ever been a more devisive force in ALFA than Rusty. Very publically not being endorsed by 3 very fair minded Admin. Has that EVER happened? Short of the Quake?
That was over a complaint against a veteran player with otherwise impeccable credentials who may have made a mistake, but they get labeled as liars, publically. When he didn't agree with them, he threw a public tantrum and quit. The people he works closest with very publically stated they were glad to be rid of him. I'm sure at least a couple prior Leads and other prior Admins feel similar. Fluffmonster, a LEAD of 2 terms even stated in this thread he refuses to work with him. That costs ALFA a pretty good DM or Admin right there.
This is also a good example from a previous post between a former, very skilled HDM.

Of course, for those who follow the rules and keep complaints private or keep these problems private out of a strained professional courtesy, 90% of the issues with him never see the light of day for voters.
The constant tension he is always at the source of is profoundly unhelpful to ALFA.
An Admin post is not a fiefdom nor is an Admin Lord & Master. They should be a friendly collaborator, coordinator and administrator who works harmoniously with the people around him. The most flattering comment I've ever heard is he is an arse, but works hard. Working hard is great, but thats not what we need in Admin.
It would be interesting to see how many actual ALFA members do not support Rusty's actions. Feel free to PM me or post that.
TSM is a huge loss for ALFA and our first Live NWN2 server after an already too-long delay. This issue is getting past the point of it being just a DM issue.

As an aside for Rick....
If you consider staying on and just playing (which is sound advice from an excellent ALFA friend I myself recieved) I know there is at least one low level group who would love to have another player in their midst, time of play permitting.

Thats sucks. Rick thanks for all the work you have done! I was honored to be allowed to Guest DM on Daggerford back in the day, and was very impressed with your commitment to making ALFA fun and believable.
The crap you have had to put up with in the past and now is far more than I would have been able to endure, I left a long time ago with a much smaller motivation.
...I understand why you are leaving, but why not run for DMA instead? I never had the Charisma or even temper to handle running for an Admin position in ALFA...
And while your at the helm as DMA why not enact a universal DM appoval process and bring in the Global DMs

Thanks everyone for the great comments. This is my final post, though I may return under certain circumstances that I doubt will ever happen.
The timing is the worst, I know. I don't know how to put it, but the desire is gone. Not through the building, or most of the people here.
I had counted on DM'ing with my old DF team, angel_caller and jimbo. I was told I was a DM, a full DM by Rusty. I was also told after beta 2 I would be the HDM by Rusty. But then he arbitrarily changed the rules.
Then I was told that I was not a full DM, that there is now a Builder-DM, and a Live-DM, there is a difference. When I was told I was a full DM, there was no explanation of 'Builder-DM', 'Live-DM', and even still, how would that affect me as the leader of the TSM team when I was told that I would be an HDM after beta 2?
There is simply a lack of trust and respect for the DMA, because he says one thing, promises something, and then changes his mind, then adds the documentation afterwards.
The statement he made that TSM was still in beta 1 made me lose all confidence in his abilities as a DMA. You may think that this statement is a little thing. Hell, it is just a label. Well, actually, it is more than that. You see, he made me a promise that when TSM hit beta 2, I would be made an HDM. So, if he admits that TSM is in beta 3, he has to either break his promise, or honor it.
There are no provisions in the documentation for the application of an HDM. An HDM is simply appointed at the discretion of the DMA. There is nothing that says an HDM has to apply like a regular DM. If you study the beta stages defined, at the end of beta 1, the DMA appoints the HDM FULL status:
Beta One
Mod Requirements: Core areas built and connected; ATs and doors connected; mod available for testing via player client at regular, announced, times; PWC available for download.
Team Requirements: Appropriate DM to take responsibility for maintenance of Standards Review Spreadsheet.
Review: Server Selection Team conduct ongoing review, focussing on the build of the core areas (particularly, quality and canonical accuracy), adherence to Server Proposal, and plans for further development; Server Selection Team provides feedback to Server Team indicating any areas of concern.
Consequences: DMA may grant Beta Two status; full status for NWN2 HDMs and EADMs.
I was granted full DM status in October, when we were in beta 1. We met all the requirements for beta 2 a long time ago. Beta 2 is when DM's APPLY for NWN STATUS, this is when the DM APP applies for DM's interested in DM'ing for TSM. It is also when I was promised to be HDM, and also when angel_caller should have been also given FULL DM STATUS as EADM.
You can go ahead and read the document, it is clear.
What the DMA is doing by denying us beta 2 status, or properly beta 3 status is an concerted effort to abuse his power. And no one is going to stop him.
The DM App situation made it difficult to recruit DM's. Wynna indicated that she was concerned that she and Darrenfx would be the only DM's for TSM at live. How did the DMA respond? He has offered no solution to aid us in the shortage of DM's except continually demand they fill out a DM APP. He must have known this was an issue. A lot of former, well qualified DM's thought it insulting to have to fill out a DM APP again.
So Indio came up with a compromise and I offered it: simply committ to the standards by answering question 9. We offered the compromise, it was flatly refused. How are we to get DM's. The DMA was hindering us.
I finally relented and submitted my DM APP, a detailed DM App that I had poured quite a bit of thought into.
As a response, not only do I get a lecture about my forum attitude and such, but more questions that need to be answered before he will approve me (when I already was actually approved).
At this point, I gave up. He will not be satisfied. I now have no idea how many hurdles I need to jump, or even if the server will get to beta 2. I do not want to work with an individual who makes up the rules as he goes. Who makes demands on procedures that are not documented. Who makes promises and guarantees and changes his mind.
I am sorry to say I cannot be the quasi HDM of this server for the simple reason that if it is not acknowldeged to be in beta 3, or the very least beta 2, according to all the standards and documentation that we ALFA produced, then it will not go live on April 15th.
I am trying to wrap my head around the rational for the DMA maintaining the beta 1 label except that he is playing the same game with the server that he did with me when he indicated I was a FULL DM. He is changing the rules. He is on a power trip. He is a dictator over his own empire. What he says goes. His way or the highway.
I am a professional. This is not how a professional organization is run.
I fought with others to bring democracy to ALFA. This is not democracy.
I am leaving ALFA because:
1. The DMA made promises to me which he broke, which makes him a liar, and he has no tolerance for players that lie to DM's, yet, it is OK for him to lie.
2. The DMA does not follow procedure and standards for bringing a server through the beta stages.
3. He makes up the rules as he goes along.
If, Rusty is not DMA, I will gladly return, but I will not be here if he is DMA.
I doubt the server will be allowed to go live by April 15th, not by my leaving, because Rusty wont let it, by throwing up some more ridiculous hurdles and administrative games.
There have been a good number of people who have left ALFA because of this individual in the position he is in. I have received PM's in the last few hours of others who are also leaving because of Rusty. People who contributed far more to ALFA than I ever did.
I am not a full HDM to call for his resignation. I would hope, for the sake of ALFA, that an HDM does.

Needless to say I'm very upset to see you leave under such circumstances. You've been a champion to me since picking up TSM. Thanks.
Instead of calling for Rusty to resign, something which is perhaps too much to hope for in this climate of frosty rigidity, I call on him instead to help us get Live. Help us, for the sake of the 18 months of work we have put into it.
