We definetly should NOT disallow a race as playable because of some creative licensing by the artists. While it would be annoying to have to say "*looks less like an elemental horror than you'd assume by apparently wooshy fire hair*" we could just deal with that until a fair solution comes into play, or just indefinitely and just agree to assume that the character appears as a more toned down version for the sake of less insanity. We dealt with some pretty gruesome character models in NWN, I don't think that ought to be a killer of genasi in this instance either.

Do we believe it is possible to develop a community-wide consensus on how planetouched PCs /should/ look, and all agree to play and respond to them in accordance to it? I agree with Spider's assertion that the artistic choices made by Obsidian shouldn't force our hands- but in practice, for a PW, it seems a bit of a stretch to all agree to ignore what the PCs actually look like ingame, in favor of maybe a general appearance described in a forum post?
Am I mistaken, or do some of those interested in playing genasi actually /want/ to play with the more outrageous appearances? If so, that's another layer of trouble to deal with - Fred the hypothetical new ALFAn rolls up an Genasi, and then everyone has to tell him his PC doesn't really look like he thinks it does?
The more we're able to play the game as it appears on our screens, the better, IMHO.

Voted yes to the inclusion for those who want to play them. This is conditional on the inclusion being done tech wise by someone who doesn't already have their plate full and build wise by someone who doesn't have their plate full. You want it, make it happen...it's how everything else is being done from server selection to what to include on said servers.

Yes, variety being spicy and wonderful... or something to that effect. There will always be DMs for and DMs against.
However, without live servers, it still seems premature to kick and scream for inclusion of a race when NO ONE can play on that platform yet. Build first, play second.

In regards to the "lightly" planetouched idea that AL mentioned in his post, could we not just give them a human appearance with the SetAppearance function in the console? Is that still present in NwN2?
If one wanted to play a fire genasi who looks mostly human, choose hair, skin, and eye colours representative of the race, then use SetAppearance to give them a human model.
Now, in NwN1 the colours were not restricted by race as they are in NwN2. So this may not work if the colours are set to a number, but the colour that corresponds to that numeric value changes depending on the racial appearance. Just a thought, however.

I think it should be allowed to proven players (ie nobodys first character in ALFA). It will give new players a chance to get a feel for the community before playing a more difficult race.
And I think that a person wanting to play a race should have to run it by the DM team of the server that they are targeting to see if the character would fit. I already think that is generally what is done with Drow and the like, so why not put the same restrictions on the rest of the races?

So, I was thinking I would play a human. I have a lot of experiences with humans. Being a human, I think I could realistically pull off a human, and play one that is convincing to the other players.
I'm totally not playing a human for the bonuses that come with humans. I really like RPing humans and I think they are a very interesting race with a lot of possibilities.
If you accept my application to play a human, I think you will find that I will do quite well.
Thank you for your consideration.

Theres over 4 monster manuals now, and dear god look at the random encounter lists for most FR regions. I'm constantly suprised theres still room for the tree's in most Forest regions between the hoards of freaks, planer trash and magical accidents.
The idea that your average dirtfarmer is utterly ignorant of just about everything (egads running water in metal tubes!? DANGEROUS SORCERY! burn the witch!) is a hangover from the standardising of the quasi-medieval period designers stick just about ever sword & sorcery game in by law. Ignorant peasants in FR wouldnt surive to breed, darwin delivers a roundhouse kick to villagers who get hysterical over dealing with anything less than a dragon ridden by AO landing on their tavern and demanding "How I M1ne 4 fisch?".

call me conservative, 2nd edition, old school, TSR-apologist, traditional, WOTC-hater, whatever
just say no to tiefling, aasimar, genasi, dragonborn, warlock, sorceror, good drow, prestige classes, non-LG paladins, eladrin, and any other retconned/new/borrowed "canon" races/classes
(WOTC: oh, uhh, yeah we haven't had these until now but they've always been in Faerun, you just haven't, uhh, heard about em, yeah, that's it)
if it wasn't in Ed's original plans for Faerun (when he had it named "A Land Far Away" by the way) then punt it
what's wrong with Elves/Dwarves/Humans/Halflings and Wizards/Fighters/Thieves/Clerics
