Pooling resources

Post by ElCadaver »

Something occured to me last night while reading the forums that I would like to bring up for discussion.

Member since 24 Mar 2004... Very active while I was at uni.. I have been at times a player, DM and builder (Loudwater)..Relegated to a forum troll due to RL responsibilities of working in operating theatres, and I'm doing a Masters course and don't have time.. Hoping to play once a week once NWN2 servers are well established.

I've noticed the amount of talent we have here over the years, all working on different projects. This is party driven by different interests in facets of Faerun and partly by ego and the desire to be the boss of a server (IMO).

Imagine if it were possible for people to put their own interests aside and all focus one one server, make it great and then move on to the next, once it is a finished product ( to the extent a PW servercan be finished).

Lets say, the OAS was completed first by all, with our best efforts, as this is our 'advertising' server so to speak, and then the others finished by popular vote.... ( or some other method)

IF people could swallow their pride and ego and own ambitions and get this done, I think that we would have NWN2 servers up and running a lot sooner, than a shotgun approach at finishing many projects at once..

(Don't take the statements about pride and ego as blanket statments about the community.. we all exibit these characteristics to a greater and lesser degree.)

Example. Purely theoretical. Say we have 20 builders in total in ALFA. A server of say 200 areas would mean 10 areas each, instead of say 2 people trying to do 100 areas each as has been the case in the past. I tried to do mass areas of server in loudwater, and that in effect killed my love of building, as it became work, not recreation.

Team work = Less work = more fun = less burnout =better creativity? Who knows?

Just food for thought.... I care, I really do, or I wouldn't keep hanging around. :D

Erm, this is what has been happening for the last four to six months, at least. Rick, Indio, Marklos, Wynna, Danielmn, and others have been collaborating to push 003 towards Beta2, and onwards towards live. Rick set aside work on other projects to do this, as did Marklos and Daniel. Most effort is being put into 003 and the OAS2, and hosting is currently operating on a "whichever mod needs testing" basis. Our resources, as few as they are at current, are fairly well pooled already.

If anyone else is looking to help out, interiors are the number one need for Silverymoon currently, I believe. Moonsea will need many as well, but for the most part we are, for the same reasons you spoke of, directing most inquiries towards 003/TSM for now.

Once we've got that mod nearer to Live, we should have built enough expertise to push on another module or two. The sheer number of "tricks" and potential pitfalls involved really necessitate a "team" approach, where we can learn from each other's mistakes and successes.

Hoping to play once a week
Building once a week is allowed too, just so you know..

And just for the record, can I just add, to dispel any myths about my egomania (I save that for RL ;)) that I would much prefer someone else be HDM for Moonsea and I just build.. I'm only HDM by default because I have passion for the project and 1 other builder left. I tried to stop building Moonsea and help out but many moons ago and people wouldnt let me (and the scars from rubbing against my bonds still ache, thanks very much :))

So I help out by reskinning custom content for them instead .. I'll have those argent legion banners and stuff ready sometime soon Rick.
On indefinite real life hiatus

Hi Thangs.
I know how awesome you are mate, and how much work you do. I just can't keep up the motivation to build while I am studying and working. Will be finished studying in 2 years time.

Looking forward to being the resistance against the Zhentarim....when I get a chance
