As a game it gets 10/10 from me.
Yes, but it's a game that's telling a story. It explains how the mutating arms that spew bees works, but there are too many wtf (and not in the good way) moments with the spawning and other stuff that detract from the game. I think there are quite a few minor issues they could have done better, so no, 100% it is not.
paazin wrote:Eh, it's definitely a good shooter but I had been hoping for something that not only is a good shooter but crosses out of that realm - not gotten very far but I haven't seen that yet.
Just wait.
As for get far out of the realm of a shooter, I'm at Fort Frolic at the moment and I don't yet see it either. The graphics are good, sure. The story is good, sure, but most games aim to have a good story, Bioshock just pulls it off well. It's a FPS/Horror crossover - Doom3. You can use the environment against your enemies - Dark Messiah.

Now, the overall quality puts it way up there and certainly something for other games to aspire to, but with no innovation, it can't get 90%+

You people make me sad. Am I the only one here who played System Shock?

No, but I know about the games. How is that relevant?

Doom 3's entire horror element and storytelling style were lifted whole cloth from System Shock 2. Using the environment against your enemies was also vital, since you didn't have enough ammunition most of the time. Letting a turret do your work for you helped tremendously.

Bioshock is a continuation of the same game style, probably the closest thing to System Shock 3 we'll ever see. Yet I see so many "audio logs like doom 3 lolol ripoff" comments and it makes me sad that nobody played System Shock. :( These are the guys that invented all that stuff.

I do wish Bioshock had stuck to the more hardcore RPG elements of SS2, but I can't complain. Levine made it clear from the beginning that Bioshock was intended as a pure FPS. Other than the loss of the RPG portion it's a grand refinement of System Shock, and the creepy clown factor is higher than any game I've ever played.

*shrugs* Then it's still not innovative. It's a sequal of an innovative game.

Remind me again why something has to be innovative to be awesome?

This game kicks serious arse.

I didn't say it wasn't awesome. But scores of 90%+ are reserved for innovative games only, I'm afraid.

A spiritual sequel is not a ripoff.

The activation thing is still there. They're removing the install limits and whatnot. SecureROM is still there, but if that's seriously a problem I hope you don't play any games. Copy protection sucks but it's apparently here to stay, and basically every game uses SecureROM now. NWN2 for example. I activated it on release day just fine, I'm not sure what he's complaining about there. I'm not sure about the complaints on responses from the company, I saw Ken Levine posting on release day. Most of them are on vacation right now since they've been working twelve hour days, seven days a week for the last six months. Waiting a couple days doesn't seem like too much to ask.

On topic, I just finished and it's Ƥøا awesome. I'll be surprised if this isn't game of the year.
I have to run NWN2 in my lower disk drive, because it gets pissy in my main drive because I have Daemon tools on my pc. I have no idea why one works and the other bitches me out, but it does.

Update Daemontools. Some games still get annoyed and you have to run YASU, but NWN2 doesn't. You have to update it occasionally to get around the new versions of stuff. Or just run YASU.

Hmm... hints of Half Life 2 at the ending there. I don't know what I was expecting, but the ending seemed kind of abrupt... and a bit too easy. I had more trouble with some of the big daddies.

I'll have to play again on Harvest... Some parts of it are probably different.

GF: I never really ran low on ammo, and maxed often enough that I left loads of ammo behind, what did you think of that?

Yeah, I didn't like that. I was expecting it to be somewhat easier and less resource-strangled than System Shock 2, since Ken Levine's said many times that it was too hard (and the first time you play, it kind of is), but they went too far in the other direction. I'll be interested to replay it with a hardcore-ifying mod at some point in the future.

Part of it was my fault though, I used the security system and set splicers on each other as often as possible to conserve ammo. It's possible to let the environment do at least half your fighting for you. I was anticipating the entire game would be as resource starved as the beginning, and it didn't turn out that way.
