If you're on about means to play DnD digitally, then you are right there is gonig to be a substitution effect, but that's not what its all about. We are not just playing DnD, we are playing a video game. That DnD insider stuff is literally a digitized table-top experience. We play in a fully-articulated, immersive digital world. That difference cuts down on the substitutability.
Hmm... looks like they're going to get rid of LA, and make different feats available to different races instead as a way of making races more relevant throughout the PC's life... And they're going to stay with the class system. Personally, I liked my idea of HPs and skill points being based on race (or, rather, size) as a way of making races significantly different.
Different weapons having different effects than damage and critical damage is pretty interesting though.

Current PCs:
NWN1: Soppi Widenbottle, High Priestess of Yondalla.
NWN2: Gruuhilda, Tree Hugging Half-Orc

It would make our lives so much easier if we could do that...NickD wrote:Hmm... looks like they're going to get rid of LA, and make different feats available to different races instead as a way of making races more relevant throughout the PC's life...

Heh, found it.Mulu wrote:It is going to be fun reading all the Third editioners talk trash about Fourth edition. Makes me want to look up the old threads on the Bioware Boards where I trashed Third edition in favor of AD&D. Ah, memories.
me five years ago wrote:Now, I heard that the retards who bought the rights were involved in Magic the Gathering, and that the 3rd Edition rules were written by someone who hated AD&D and basically wanted to make "Diablo 2 the role-playing game." That's pretty sad if it's true.

Hahnsoo and I went on to game quite a bit after that. He finally convinced me of the utility of easy multiclassing. "Don't think of classes as professions, think of them as skill sets."
Oh, and here's another one!

So you've always been judgemental and condescending then, huh?

And a noob too! I've been powergaming since basic D&D! It's not the rules, it's the people you play with.

Someone with in excess of a decade's experience in 2e hopefully has developed beyond powergaming. But new gamers don't have that background.

Yeh, I heard about this on the DnD podcast - 35 minute commercial is what it was.
Personally, I'm not bothering to get 4th edition. Every reworking WOTC does seems to be an overpriced, overcomplicated, hackneyed rewrite of the old AD&D bluebook anyways.
The only place I play DnD any more is on NWN1. Hopefully you guys don't decide to go to 4th edition!
But what will be will be I'm sure... *shrugs and sighs shaking his head*

You didn't keep reading...NickD wrote:And a noob too! I've been powergaming since basic D&D! It's not the rules, it's the people you play with.
See, the issue being debated was the emphasis of the rules. The 3e PHB actually has a chapter on how to powergame. That's very different from the older books. The very last post in the second thread says it all, and I didn't even write it.me five years ago wrote:So to the extent that the game is really up to the individuals who play it (and not just the DM, that's only one person's imagination; much better to draw on the whole group) then so long as people have an opportunity to role-play and be imaginative than the game will be worth playing. That said, a game system that encourages adolescent style playing by allowing stupid race/class combinations with rapid leveling, high power curves and heroic feats, rather than taking a slower, low power approach within the context of a well defined game universe, will ultimately cause those players to lose interest in the long run, and does not add significantly to the role-playing experience. How long can a 40th level half-orc barbarian with a whirlwind attack entertain you?

Anyway, I look forward to seeing the 3rd v 4th edition rules debate in a year.

I personally think we were lucky to get NWN2 with a toolset and DM Client, as messed up as it is. The economics don't seem to support toolsets and DM Clients, given the work required, especially DM clients. Remember, we had to *beg* for a DM Client in NWN2. They had shelved it during development. If there is an NWN3, I doubt very much that it will have what we need. It just doesn't generate a big enough return.NickD wrote:It'll probably be 4e in NWN3, though.

At the time they were making NWN2, wanted people to pay for DDO, so why on earth would they support a DM client and easier to use toolset? Most of the things folks did with NWN1 they saw no return on.
I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.~~Groucho Marx
