Like I said, some games do it better than others, but ultimately all CRPGs are about doing quests that involve you going around killing things. Some may give you the options to not fight, but what percentage of players really go through an entire game without killing things? You can also not do the side quests that involve killing things, but then you can do the exact same thing in WoW. You don't have to do any quests at all. You can spend your time cooking and mining and collecting herbs and hiding from all the monsters if you really want to.
Lots of SP mods have plot as their major component, rather than combat, and of course you could make an SP mod with no combat at all. But yeah, fantasy combat is the genre after all.
SP NWN mods don't fit into the equation because they're not made to make money or even necessarily appeal to a mass market.
Personally I can't bring myself to play WoW, or any MMO, I hate leveling treadmills.
While I agree that MMOs are more explicit about it, what I'm saying is almost all CRPGs are just levelling treadmills. Some just put a better story around it than others.
