Hmm, not really. They are chosing to play a barbarian - the fact that the class is illiterate is a drawback that they might well dislike.
And they can put a point into Speak Languages and fix that. They can do that at first level with NWN2, in fact.
But they may choose not to, since the player can already read ;)

Mayhem, I understand completely where you're coming from, and if it wasn't for the impression i've received from the scripting team that something like this would be a lot of work to do, I would be for it as well.

But, ultimately, it's not about immersion or rolepay... it's about ensuring people don't metagame. I think the rule still stands that if a person grossly metagames, they're up for review and potential ban. As it is, having a character that cannot read... reading a book, is motive for player review. Roleplayers will refrain from such 'uncharacteristic' behavior, although some may require a reminder.

As it is, and as i've read, this is very low on the scripting team's list... and unless someone wants to step up and do the work themselves, this discussion is moot for now.

Still, it's a good discussion. :)
