Player poll: Prefered solutions to the density problem?

This is a general open discussion for all ALFA, Neverwinter Nights, and Dungeons & Dragons topics.

Which do you prefer as a player?

Increase density by allowing "dead" servers to be removed from live, and put back to beta at the discretion of admin. Note this could include servers with a few active campaigns, even ones your PC participates in.

Increase density by controlling the number of servers allowed to be live. Once live, servers would not be removed, even if "dead", and their spots could not be taken by other servers while they remained live.

A combination of the first two choices, which allows a maximum number of servers, but servers deemed "dead" by admin can only be removed if they are to be replaced by a server in beta.

Just provide a clear-and-present system to match players and DMs by timezones and playstyles, for both new and existing PCs. This includes giving existing PCs IC reasons to travel, if need be.

woohoo for Sembia!

Send them down. We'll take care of them as best we can, including helping them move if they wish.

Why would anyone want to leave Sembia in the first place? Is there really anything else to see outside of that marvelous server?

In all seriousness... why not make Sembia THE starting server for new PCs. We have enough lovin' to share around.
Do you know what "nemesis" means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by an 'orrible cunt... me.

Someone wanting to play an elf would do well to start somewhere other than Sembia. Elves might not be killed on sight anymore, but you can bet your ass there are easier places for them to start.

Sembia is not a bad "Eastern hub" at the moment... I am not sure if DF is maybe kind of the "Western hub", I'm just thinking in terms of places where I'm seeing high player numbers in times that I tend to look for a game. Every once in awhile though plots, DM adds and subtracts, and other things cause the hotspots to go cool, and a new hotspot to arise.

I'm all for it, though I am not of an objective point of view

I am not going to make any server, or any two servers, mandatory starting servers. While Sembia is a fine server with a good DM Team, it cannot be all things to all people, and one of ALFA's strengths is allowing people to play the characters of their choice - and not all character concepts start in Sembia or involve Sembia. Same with Daggerford. Now, if the OAS DMs would like to suggest Sembia and/or Daggerford as starting servers and explain why to incoming applicants, that is fine. I think the more people know the better, and there is no reason for us to play 'hide-the-ball' with which servers are seeing a lot of traffic and which servers are seeing less - but if someone really wants to play an Uthagdt barbarian from The Frozen North, or a drow in the Underdark, or some mongrel half-breed from Skullport, I am going to let them.

No need to pick a default starting server. Just recommend the ones that we know have active DMs and let players choose what suits there character concept the best. One glance at Gamespy also tells the players where the action is... or isn't anyway.

Well, we could keep new PCs from being issued visas on certain servers without a DM's intervention. In theory I know admissions people should direct them elsewhere, and they should look at gamespy themselves before playing 10+ hours on a server, but in practice that doesn't always seem to happen. If people really want a "hard" solution like cutting servers, this seems like a less drastic measure which could be tried. I'm pretty neutral on it though, I'd still rather give new players the information to make informed choices on their own.

On BG for example, there is nothing for a new PC to do on his own, or even with a small group of new PCs. Except die a horrible death, of course.

last thing before nwn2 goes live, we shut down all the servers but the beefiest one we got...and then its ALFA cage match!

I suspect there's going to be a bit of time before NWN2 goes live and the first ALFA2 servers go live. It would be an opportune time to experiment with some of the more ... controversial rule ideas that people have suggested. However, there are some people that will want to continue playing ALFA1 either in conjunction with ALFA2 or instead of it.
Current PCs:
NWN1: Soppi Widenbottle, High Priestess of Yondalla.
NWN2: Gruuhilda, Tree Hugging Half-Orc

Just a little side note for all you hard-core, fearful, militant, rigid peeps: People volunteer for this project. The more people that volunteer, the more people enthusiastic and involved, and allowed to give... the bigger it gets. You go to E3 and talk to the big wigs, but yet, limit your horizons and scale yourselves constantly when it comes to home. There should be no limits. What can we build? What is acheivable? Can we beat the number of servers we had last time?

We are adamant, and rigid on soooo many policies. It's turned away alot.. no, more than alot.. many. Too many. I've watched so many people disappear and fade away. And why is that? Isn't that sad to you? I'm not saying, let's chop the rules up and have a hay day, but I'm saying we need to be abit more open about some things. A bit more gracious with the way we handle our people.

If you think ultra-conservatism will keep this boat afloat... well, it probably will on a limited scale as you all have currently planned, with all their fingers in everyone's cookie jars, counting cookies.... But it'll most likely be the most pungently stale and generic place around, where you can't fart without being banned.

So... May I ask why you think it's right to crap on people wanting to give, regardless of player congregations of minimal proportions?
