Actually, my employer didnt accept my request for a longer leave of absence, so I wont be able to
make it at all. Perhaps later in the year but right now its looks rather gloomy. Sorry guys, the
viking invasion will have to wait a bit.

As long as my application interview goes okay and I get that desired stamp in my passport, Acadius and I can come. I get the stamp immediately after a successful interview apparently. My interview date is Dec 1st, both our emplyers are really good about time off and I've not taken any long blocks since March.

So basically we are good for any date after Dec 1st. Tickets are expensive end of story, so I doubt end of January vs February is going to make much variation in cost to fly there. My birthday is in mid-Feb but I can get drunk in any country ;-)

We can also fly into pretty much anywhere and we're intrigued by the 'Sydney Party Bus' idea. Trapped on a bus driving on the left side of the road with a bunch of people we only know via the wonder that is the internet sounds pretty crazy hehe. The only thing we're going to need is possibly a friendly face to meet us at the airport, or good directions how to meet up with everyone when jetlagged/lost/driving an omg right-hand drive car and help with accommodations.

Ooooh I just realised something... duty free alcohol. Now who wants to be my friend? :-P

Lou

Edited to add- I just asked my PI if I could take a couple of weeks off in January to go to Australia and he said yes 8)

Ok, seeing as Rotku is putting in an application for leave, and the possibility of 2 other international ALFAns coming is growing, i suggest we lock in the Australia day weekend as the time for this one:

Janurary 28 and 29, or Janurary 26 - 29th if you can get the time off.

Lock it in, Eddie.

Great, thanks Swift for pushing this along.

Okay, if I'm headed to Aussie I'm probably going to stop by in Brisbane at some stage or another to visit a friend up there. So probably either Brisbane, then bus/train to Sydeny (what's the best way?) then head down with you guys to Melbourn before flying out! Or the opposite way around. Any suggestions as to the best way and/or the best means of transport (best being cheapest, minus hitchhiking) to get between Brisbane and Sydney?

I'd go train mate. I can't say i know whats cheaper, having taken neither bus nor train (i always drive). But country link (train) would have the speed! Oh yes its fast! Plus you can buy booze during the trip from the onboard bar!! Just don't let the barman catch on that you've had your fill, otherwise he'll put a booze ban on you. Those damn bartenders!! Listen buddy, I'LL tell YOU when i've hads enuff!! You gots me!!!!

Since there have been no objections, ill be locking in my weeks holiday from work tomorrow night :D

Now we just got to work on how we are going to do things. Bool wondered about 4 days (from australia day to the sunday). Perhaps, to take into account those that cant get to melbourne for 4 days, we could sort of split the time between sydney and melbourne?

Eg people go to sydney on australia day, have a day or 2 there, then party bus it down to melbourne for another day or 2.

I just dont want to impose too much on Thangs, since i wouldnt be able to afford to actually stay at a hotel or somethin. Me (and others) crashing at his place for 4 days may not be what his missus would like :D

28-29 Jan Dates are perfect for me..

Dont know if I'll have time to jump on the crazy Sydney partay bus unfortunately folks. Might be a fly in night of the 27th fly out night of the 29th for me..

If you are coming to Brisvegas Rot we could catch up there but after Feb 1st I'll be taking care of my partners medical needs for the month so I wont be getting out much if at all.

looking forward to it.
