I was reading the initial post, decided to vote for #1 (of course)
but for some reason, i voted for #2. Either i've lost my balls or I
don't know what happened. Anyways, I prefer #1, but I voted for #2.
Sue, hate me, love me, I don't give a rats behind.

pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.

On the internet, we have something called free speech.
I move that we remove the PG13 thing. 98% of the people in alfa are over 18. I dont care if we lose the 2%,- or we can ask the 2% if they are horrified by the occational cussword or mention of titty.
This doesnt mean that the channel shouldnt be moderated,- far from it.
Twiggee mentioned the other day on the channel that we should get a bot,- im all for that and am willing to supply a few. They'll be able to take care of alot of the annoyances that occur.
Apart from that we should moderate things like racism etc, and basically go by our gut feeling imo. The last thing i want is a place where everyone has to walk on needles all the time,- this IS after all irc for better or worse.

votet for #2
moderation is a must.
my suggestion:
give ops to everyone who is an alfa member for more than 12 months ans didnt break any rule by now ...

That alone tells me youre kinda new to irc. If not you'd know that giving alot of people op on a large channel is a very very bad idea. Not trying to seem arrogant here, but ive been on irc since '97 and run alot of different channels through the years.Calis wrote: my suggestion:

The idea that moderation involves focusing on certain words is ludicrous. It personal attacks and bullying that are the problem. Expletives are just that, they are just words. You can personally attack someone with the intention of hurting them without swearing once, and you can swear without attacking anyone.
ffs ban people who go into chat and hurt others, ban people who use chat to meta, ban people who use chat to boast openly about how they PG, etc etc.
Put one person in as chat mod and let them do their job, it is by its very nature subjective, so let them make some judgement calls without throwing ANOTHER damn rule book at them to enforce.

that has nothing to do with how long youve been into irc. and 70 people is no a large chat in my eyes. ive moderated channels with 400+ users Smile
but i agree with you that giving ops to too many people can cause trouble instead of reducing it. thats why i said, give ops only to those who are longer than 12 months member of alfa and with no previous convinction ...
so give ops to those we can fully trust ...

i think time has a lot to do with trust ...but hey, this isnt about our personal opinions how trust should work .. so lets focus on the chat-topic again.boombrakh wrote:time has nothing to do with trust.Calis wrote:so give ops to those we can fully trust ...

I've been on IRC since it was first invented by alexander graham bell in 1875.
I've booted countless antisocial scallywags in my time and in 1996 I recieved the lifetime achievment award from the Society for Handsome Internet Telecommunicators after dishing out my one millionth offical permanent banning.
Moreover, I have had several witty banning messages published in Internet Moderator Quarterly and am regularly booked as an after-dinner speaker at IRC conventions, where my many hilarious anecdotes about n00bs asking how to change their nickname always go down a storm.
Im not saying any of this to boast or be arrogant, just to demonstrate my knowledge and authority in this field and provide the context for my response to this thread's central question:
OMFG!!! lololLOLO!! l1gh5en uP!!! wTf 1s t3h pr0bl3m w1v u say fsck 4n 8008135 1n t3h ch45?????????!!!!!!111 wTf?????? we 41nt m0r0ns or r3tard5!!!!lllololololol!!!

Voted 2, because I think chat needs some moderation. I haven't had time for chat in the past few weeks though, so I know nothing of a recent crackdown. I want moderation, but it should not be excessive. To get banned for using bad language sounds like a joke to me... That should only happen if the person persists after being warned.

One hopes common sense like this prevails over the toddler safe moderation we have had in the last couple of weeks, and the proposed continuation of that style of moderation.Grey Pilgrim wrote:Will everyone just take a chill pill? Theres nothing wrong with saying f*sk or boobies in chat. We arent completely stupid and can moderate ourselves.

I used to stay in chat regularly just in case any one needed me on NC, or to get hold of me for any reason. Im rarely there any more, the channel is petty and irritating.
People can say "dont go into chat if you dont like it bla bla bla" but its a tool that make a DMs job far easier and more efficient. Ensuring that a good number of people dont log into it because it irritates them is, I must say, a grand acheivment for all the people out there who have so little security and self worth in their real lives they have to sound off in chat.
Fine this IRC, free speech, whatever. But we are primarily a roleplay community, IRC is a tool we use. So lets have a mod structure based around it being a DnD group and not a group of l337 IRC nerds, eh?
