Heya,
So I think I finally ironed out the problems with the bard scripts and the various performing venues. As you know, this is a once a day thing available.
First the venues and the DC multipliers:
Hanged Lantern: BarDC1 - No followers required
Beer Golem: BarDC2 - 100 followers required
Jade Jug: BarDC3 - 400 followers required
Inn of the Dripping Dagger: BarDC4 - 800 followers required
Basically the idea is you roll a perform check against every patron of the bar, if you beat them you gain them as a follower. Their DC is a D20 + 6xBarDC, so easier bars have easier patrons!
If you can beat at least 3xBarDC patrons at the bar, then you get a reward, also based on the difficulty!
You get gold if you do. It is equal to: Final Perform Roll x BarDC / 3 + a number of D20's equal to the BarDC squared. This means gold goes up exponentially with better establishments!
To get XP you have to beat the 3xBarDC patrons, but also there is a level cap. Level cap is set at 2xBarDC + 4. So a level 7 Bard playing in the Hanging Lantern isn't going to get better stuck playing there (2x1 + 4 = 6) however if he moves to the Beer Golem he will until level 8 (2x2 + 4 = 8 ).
You will always gain followers of any patrons that you beat their DC.
The trick is you have to work your way there with enough followers, and then have the perform skills to beat them when you get there. Its not enough to just have one, you need the work and the skill but it is a significant reward for investing in the perform skill beyond just the lame bard song ability.
Hope this helps clear things up!

Waterdeep - Guitar Hero Edition: Bard Scripts Explained
There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind

That bard song ability IS lame.

After trying the new perform script, I now consider your PG'ing bard jokes to be appropriate.
Nice.
