I am saying goodbye to ALFA

So once again, we give a big round of applause to our DMAs great communication and addiction to pointless bueracracy and rules
Let me give you a hint, Rusty - so close to such a big deadline as going Live, you cannot afford to annoy such vital team members, if you wish to succeed.
Honestly Rick, I feel for you. Although I can't see the reason itself in those PMs, apart from some more pigheadedness by Rusty, I'll echo what fluff said before. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes either.
I really do hope you reconsider. Don't let one person drive you away - it's happened to too many good people over the years, I don't want to see another leave. Keep in mind, most of the people who voted for Rusty haven't really seen him at his best. I don't think it is ALFA you are at odds with in the slightest, I am sure most if ALFA was given a choice between seeing TSM go Live in your capable hands and fueling Rusty's ego for another 5 months, they would choose you without a doubt.
Give it a second thought, Rick. Sleep on it. ALFA wants you - this thread alone is a good illistration of that. Don't let one person drive you away.

Replace stange with downright stupid. The man has been a DM here for years, and yet he has to apply again?Hialmar wrote:Well you know when someone is already a DM it seems strange to have to apply for it.
That is as far as i would have got. If that is how badly DMs are going to be treated, i certainly wouldn't try jump onboard.
No, I am sorry you didn't see all the drama behind it all. And you don't want to.
The simplest solution is that Rusty needs to HDM TSM. He can recruit the DM's. He can make himself a DM, but first he needs to send himself a DM App, and then PM himself back and say it isn't good enough, that he needs to answer more questions.
Then he can spend countless hours building, debugging, and co-ordinating the efforts of a dozen builders, some unable to finish due to good legitimite reasons and replace them with others. He can produce the outlandish documentation required for approval. He can jumble around the beta labels.
Most of all, he can recruit the DM's.
We know the kind of experience he has building servers. We know the kind of experience he has recruiting DM's. Shouldn't be a problem.
Folks, I am leaving because the DMA has too much power. He can make or break ALFA. He has more power than the LA. ALFA will survive for a while with NWN1 servers. But with Rusty, there will be no NWN2 servers. As Indio stated, if you vote for Rusty, you doom TSM.
Listen to experience.

Damn it all
I hope this is a prank Rick, else I and and some buddies in the 48th will be taking a trip up to Ottawa to talk sense into your sorry Hasty P ass!
Joking aside, please think this over. Even if you have to take a break from DMing, at least stick around to play. You've given so much to ALFA that it hardly seems fair to have you go off with no return whatsoever.

This whole situation does not sit well with me.
To all parties involved, please consider me as an impartial mediator on this matter. We have nothing to gain by further tensions right now and I would be happy to use my facilitation skills to assist. If its gone past the point of dialogue you can both work with then perhaps I can help.
I feel terrible that it has come to this and I've been completely blind to it.
All I can do is hope that tensions with the DMA ease and that you'll stay on and see your work bear fruit Rick because I know exactly how much effort you've put in.

You've been a vital and active member for as long as I have been here Rick. I have and will admire your tenacity and giving spirit to the community. You've done wonders in both formats of the game, in a very commendable fashion. Hats off to you. Not going to talk you into coming around, sometimes it is better to hand it all over and move on down the road. This is a hobby, a passtime, meant for fun....when you begin to worry and form angst over it, something is seriously wrong.

You know...I've had a lot of second thoughts about the administrative structure of ALFA lately, something that began with the discussion of a council a little while ago. Not that I'm advocating a council - I'm not - but I've become far more aware than I've ever been before of how strong the divisions are in people's vision for this community. That one person's opinion should count more than another's when the two are, for all intents and purposes, equals just doesn't square. How ALFA functions now may well be an efficient approach to decision making, but it lacks the sort of balance one would expect from a volunteer community. As a result, when we run into the sorts of disagreements we've seen these past few weeks, the disagreements have a tendency of becoming very personal very quickly, something which I think a council-like format would most certainly defray.
What makes matters worse is that our decision making is very often arbitrary. It's based largely on individual preferences for things like standards, playing styles, community rules, departmental procedures...so does it really make sense for a group of 5 folks (of which I am one) to decide for *everyone* when there clearly are significant differences between us? I'm becoming more and more uncomfortable with this idea to be perfectly honest. I'm not here to govern. I'm here to contribute.
I think the bottom line is that important decisions simply need to be reached in a more collective fashion. There is clearly a very real need for greater balance in viewpoints among the key contributors in this community that our current administrative structure does not facilitate. That much is simply undeniable. We've thus far had to rely on the skills and sensibilities of elected administrators to work through our differences, but as we can see, it doesn't always work out well (not that this is an indictment of any admin - they're only human - but rather our charter).
We need to adjust sooner rather than later.
p.s. And I forgot to say the most important thing. Rick, I hope you'll take a little time off and reconsider your decision. We need you.

It's a shame some sort of compromising couldn't be reached on those matters. It's a shame we lose the HDM and one of the main builders for the only server we have close to live, merely a week before the date set for launch.
I hope that if you don't come back you can find or, even start yourself, a project that makes you happier. Thank you for all the work you put forth, both in NWN1 and NWN2.

There clearly is a difference in views on what ALFA leadership positions may be about.
For some it is a case of 'being the Boss'.
You put me in this position and therefore "I am in charge" of this section of ALFA.
This is a lot different from the leadership position being one of advocacy or even simply "I am an organizer".
I wonder how often Admin actually ask their constituencies opinion on every matter.
How often Admin are willing to totally advocate a position they disagree comletely with, because it's what their constituency wants, as opposed to what they think is 'best'.
I mean this over the course of an elected admin body, not the current body or any particular individual.
One of the things I wanted to do as DM Admin was put the power of the DMA Domains squarely in the hands of the DMs. Details were TBD, but actually having most major community impacting decisions decided by DM vote as opposed to DMA whim.
I think this is a very important distinction. I wonder how many of the DMA votes were garnered from actual working DMs, as opposed to a variety of technical staff members and other individuals. May have been all of them, may have been none of them. But of 32 capable voters, I think less than half were actual working DMs.
Anyway, just some random thoughts...
