I've booted countless antisocial scallywags in my time and in 1996 I recieved the lifetime achievment award from the Society for Handsome Internet Telecommunicators after dishing out my one millionth offical permanent banning.
Moreover, I have had several witty banning messages published in Internet Moderator Quarterly and am regularly booked as an after-dinner speaker at IRC conventions, where my many hilarious anecdotes about n00bs asking how to change their nickname always go down a storm.
Im not saying any of this to boast or be arrogant, just to demonstrate my knowledge and authority in this field and provide the context for my response to this thread's central question:

Was the chat room so terrible, offensive and shameful before the lead election that we needed a huge crackdown so that a toddler wont read anything offensive?
IIRC before that the people that got kicked and/or banned were a) saying stuff like racial slurs, sexually abusive comments or constant profanity, or b) people acting like downright dickheads.
Why, all of a sudden after the lead election, are we facing such heavy handed moderation in the communitys chat room, to the point that spelling ass that way gets you kicked and warned?

The forum should have a set standard of moderation, and the moderators should work to that standard and not their own.
At the moment the level of language/behavior allowed, depends on who is actively moderating.
Set a standard and stick to it.

A simple watch the langugage is fine, no need to go over the top with it all. We all make mistakes or copy and paste things without going through them with a fine tooth combe, example being a link I posted the other day had the word fsck in it.
Hardly ban material is it.
I also think whatever is applyed in chat should be on the forums and in game.
Its strange being able to insult someone however you want IC, repeat said words on here then get a ban for copying it into chat.
We going to be banned for "Bastard Swords" as well?

For those that keep asking, chat has indeed been that bad for some time now. Part of the problem is moderation. Language that is absolutely forbidden was repeatedly used when the moderators (those that actually bother) were not watching. After warning people repeatedly, I got PMs with logs showing that other mods were allowing this behavior to continue when I wasn't online. I really can't be in chat 24 hours a day to catch the worst of it...and god help me I wouldn't want to be either.
Several of the worst offenders have pushed the limit to the breaking point. The rules lawyers insist that unless things are strictly and individually forbidden and posted then the moderators in all fairness cannot do anything. The more we tried to give simple reminders, the harder they pushed us. The spew I got in PMs from simply telling someone to watch their language is unbelievable.
We were told repeatedly that certain things were not specificly stated in the rules, so the rules were tightened. We got pushed even more and the hammer dropped on everybody. I personally would lay the blame on those that brought the change about but I know that Bear and I will remain the targets. Such is the Alfa way.

Maybe we should create a list of disgusting and offensive words that shoudnt be used in chat under any circumstances? I'll start it off:
"Huggle"
Edit: and "Smoogle" too, you sick perverts.

"Huggle"
pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.

Before everyone goes off and starts quoting Amendments ...zicada wrote:On the internet, we have something called free speech.
"Free speech" means the government can't censor what you say.
Corporations/charity groups/the Pope/ALFA can censor to their hearts' content, and legally, there's pretty much jack-all you can do about it.
*Steps aside* You may continue.

Free speech means you can set up your own message board or chat room and say what ever you want, not that you can say whatever you want in someone elses.LBaeldeth wrote:Before everyone goes off and starts quoting Amendments ...zicada wrote:On the internet, we have something called free speech.

These were basicly the chat rules before the issue was forced.Hyperbolic wrote:The hard and fast rules would be- 1.) No sexual talk. No words like c*nt, tw*t, etc. 2.) No swearing just to swear, sentences like "MFing son of a MFing b*tch" (just explicitly spelled out) is too much. 3.) No swearing aimed at people in the community, whatsoever. 4.) No racist/sexist/etc. statements/jokes of any kind.
