A ranger can use a variety of weapons and is quite capable in combat. His skills allow him to survive in the wilderness, to find his prey, and to avoid detection. He also has special knowledge about certain types of creatures, which makes it easier for him to find and defeat such foes. Finally, an experienced ranger has such a tie to nature that he can actually draw upon natural power to cast divine spells, much as a druid does.  Although many rangers follow the gods of nature in Faerun, in ALFA, rangers are not required to follow a nature diety.
A world exists outside city walls. Those who walk in nature as with a friend — a friend both beautiful and dangerous—know this world. They know the touch of snow, the taste of secret waterways, the feel of nature, wild and untamed… and they find ease in the company of beasts. Though, indeed, ask a druid of the Silver Circle just who is the beast, and man’s name is foremost. Savagery bears not the guilt of duplicity, and only man, among the animals, lies. It is given to these to know the friendship of animals, boon companions to follow them from a natural environment into danger, and such is the trust they have. Be certain never to abuse this trust. The gods who grant care to dwellers in the wild care firstly, often, for the beasts. Remember such, and honor it.
Animal Companions - Neverwinter Nights 1
Animals may not be summoned during combat. New companions might not come when summoned from within an urban area. Animals may be dismissed for a short time or permanently. They persist across servers and level up with the PC at levels 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18. Animal choice at PC creation has no effect. Rangers summon level 1 animals at level 6 and at 5 levels less than PC level thereafter. The Realms have a very varied wildlife, and thus the available animal companions vary depending on where you are.
