Items may not be used without knowing first what they do, and how they activate. Unknown items are known as unidentified, and must first be identified.

Items may be identified using an Identify spell. Some other situations can reveal the magical properties of an item, as listed below.

Potions

Potions may be identified with a DC 25 Spellcraft check. There is no retry on this, and it is handled automatically when examining a potion for the first time.

Scrolls

Scrolls may be identified with a DC 20 + Spell Level Spellcraft check. A retry may be performed every 24 hours, and is handled automatically when examining a scroll.

Additionally, Read Magic may be cast on a scroll to fully identify it.
