One of the things that I have noticed since joining ALFA, is that most do not take into account just how much space the server actually covers. As well the other servers, and the distance between them. It's normal for the interface.
I was thinking, that it might be pretty easy to add something to each of the maps that would help keep in mind the scope of things. "Milestones"
A milestone used to be a marker that would actually indicate distance from major points. Placing a marker near each AT on the roads to indicate distance to the city/town in either direction, would be a good way to help everyone remember just how far they are traveling. Will help keep perspective.
I'd be willing to help generate them if this is an acceptable idea.

Could also rename the ATs to indicate how much distance they cover. e.g. "Farther along the Lion's Way (~20 mi)".
Though, of course, our densest-built areas in ALFA portray about 3% of the ground that they span (even-- or perhaps especially-- the cities. Silverymoon and Baldur's Gate would need to be their own servers if we didn't handwave away and ellipt enormous portions of those cities), and a perfectly-pure simulationist representation of our world would require about a day to get across any AT. I promise that doing so would be rubbing our inability to provide a properly-immersive experience for travel in the faces of our members.

Re: Milestones for Baldur's Gate
Would be problematic for TSM and WHL which make use of travel maps to cover the vast distances between the servers extremities. We would have to come up with how far each 'off map' area was which is more of a hassle than anything else.
Re: Milestones for Baldur's Gate
I had thought of that, but then they would need to be re-edited if a new area was placed between. This is why I though the milestone objects would be appropriate.Zelknolf wrote:Could also rename the ATs to indicate how much distance they cover. e.g. "Farther along the Lion's Way (~20 mi)".

They would need to be re-edited anyway, to indicate the new AT destination.gonz.0 wrote:I had thought of that, but then they would need to be re-edited if a new area was placed between. Re: Milestones for Baldur's Gate
The travel maps already convey distance pretty well, but you could still drop signposts or milestones down here and there.Swift wrote:Would be problematic for TSM and WHL which make use of travel maps to cover the vast distances between the servers extremities. I prefer milestones to AT messages as they make good IC and OOC sense.
gonz.0, if you want to give us a list of milestones, their areas and the text you think should be on them (including goblin graffiti, where appropriate), I'm sure we can add them at some point. We do have a looooong list of crap waiting to go in the mod, but this is at least an easy and non-breaky change.
Re: Milestones for Baldur's Gate
I already have a list of these I made up over a year ago.
Just never had the time to put them in-game.

People talk of bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as man, so artistically cruel.

That's cool Paazin. I'm glad you had already thought of them. Let me know if I can help with what you already have or expand on them where needed.paazin wrote:I already have a list of these I made up over a year ago.
