Changing Gods...

Post by johnlewismcleod »

I've never considered or done this with a PC before, but it may be in the cards. I'm a bit faerun lore ignorant as well as an ALFA newbie and I'd appreciate having some input on what would be entailed and what IC consequences and considerations I should think about before making a blunder for my PC due to player ignorance.

I suppose it it important to mention here that my PC is not a cleric, though I am curious about clerics changing gods.

Another question I've always had is why a non-cleric PC must choose a single god from the pantheon. I would think in a multi-theistic world regular folk would make it a point to honour any gods who they felt might effect them and would tend to give alms to many different gods. I realize that question is somewhat academic, but I've always felt the pressure exerted on PC's IG to choose one god to follow as a bit monotheistic .

A script could probably do it in game. Or editing your character save file on the server.

You can pick no deity on the chr creation too.

Having a single patron is enforced by the FR world/afterlife, but actual prayers (or at least fear/respect) from the common folk go to all gods. People beg Tymora for good luck, but there's always an empty chair at important events saved for Beshaba. It's just that there's the one deity that's sympathised with the most, who a character hopes will send a minion collect his/her soul when he/she dies.

A non-cleric changes deities by just starting to pray to the new one. I'm fairly certain DMs have a tool to make character sheets reflect as much.

Clerics changing deities must first forsake the first one and begin praying to the new one, and then seek an Atonement spell from an appropriate high-level cleric and, if that atonement quest is completed (mind you, step #1 demands that it be done with no spells, no turning/divine feats/whatevs. You've essentially got aristocrat levels minus some skillpoints at this point), they select new and appropriate domains (tends to require a rebuild) and get their divine spellcasting back, but from the new deity.

Non-clerics can basically just change their minds. Think of it in RL equivalent. An individual does from anywhere between 0 seconds and 50 years of soul searching and decides "I'm done being a snake handling pentecostal... and I'm now a granola crunching wiccan" (no offense to either snake handlers or witches).

In FR though the conversion I guess has to be "true", not just a lip service thing, or else you're risking Faithless or False status, depending on whether your PC was really "not true to anyone", or "sort of adhered to a given faith, but did a really terrible job of it." Then you end up with various horrible afterlife possibilities (other than being collected up to have an afterlife in what should've been your patron's realm, which in cases would be pretty horrible anyhow).

PS - if you change your PC faith weekly, it's really going to look more like the Faithless/False problem going on, than a sincere call it promise of your PC's soul to say, a nice chap like Garagos or whoever else you pick.

I think it's fair to say the average fellow would know more than I do. The PC's live in that world, rather than peering in at it through a computer screen.

I think the DMs used to be able to change deity on the DM wand in NWN1. Not sure if this has been added for NWN2 or not. If you are a non-cleric it's pretty much you can alter whenever your PC has a good IC reason to do so. I wouldn't make this change more than a couple times per char though.
