Stone cold

"Stone cold"

“Whit no willow, you do the scouting”, Bron nods and prepares for the task. Only few moments later he is alone up front, scanning the hills for any danger to the group. They are only four, himself, Moon, Nega and Bital. “Only four", he smiles a little to himself, the trio he walks whit this day is some of the most experienced he knows, Bital THE MOST of them all. This walk shouldn’t offer anything they can’t handle, that is, if he can spot it in time.

To scout is a lonesome task, stay focused, stay hidden, and keep your mind on the task. Be prepared to signal the group should danger come, spot possible ambush sites, traps, tracks and other possible dangers.

A quick sweep of the hillside shows him no signs of trouble so he signals the rest to follow.

As he crosses the Serpents bridge he thanks the gods for his luck that there were no traps today, Oh The gods knows how much he hates traps!. He pauses and waits for the trio to come closer. Hearing the talk between them again tells him that they are close enough, so he goes on. Oh, how much more he wants to walk next to them, talk to them, and hear news from Cormyr. But a scout is needed trough dangerous parts and now they are close to the most dangerous of them all, Talking will have to wait untill later.

The walk is done to honor a departed friend, Fundin. The dwarf that wasn’t like other dwarves. Unique, one of a kind and special, are words fitting for him. He fell to a pair of stalkers, and they now walk to place a mark on the site. He can hear Nega and Bital making plans to get the master mason to make a marker, but he has plans of his own.

He is, as he is supposed to, the first to walk into the hills, or the bumpy grassland. He can hear from behind that Bital does not recognize these hills as hills. “I say grasslands anyway” he hears her say and can’t help but smile. Slowly he makes his way along the road, his eyes darting from hill to hill trying to spot anything out of place, but nothing moves, except himself and the group.

“Halfway and still nothing, a good sign” he thinks to himself as he hears the sound of Moons bowstring. He darts back to the others, arming himself as he runs, only to see the last of the small eye-demons fall to the ground. He is sure they were not there when he passed, must have been the sound the trio made that attracted them. He will have to remember that, and stay closer when they move on.

A few remarks about his scouting is made before a volley of magic rays flies trough the air and hits Moon, tracing the path of the rays, leads Bron’s gaze to the largest demon he has ever seen, several times the size of the smaller ones, and many, many more eyes. Common sense tells him that he should run, but it is attacking his friends, AND IT DOES NOT BELONG HERE. Instinct takes over and he pulls a dart from his belt and tosses it. It flies short, but not short enough. The demon turns and focuses all its eyes at Bron, he can see the rays coming, and tries to let loose another dart just as they hit. One, two, three, hits him but he manages to stand against them unharmed, Four, this one hurts, Five, Hurts even more, he can feel the impact like a spear piercing his skin, then the last hits and the pain subdues.

Everything feels like it happens in slow motion now, he can see Bital raining death down on the demon, Moons bow in the corner of his eye lets arrows fly, then the bow is dropped and hands form a curespell. A faint touch on his shoulder makes him believe he was the target, but he cannot feel it. Must be his mind playing tricks on him, but the healing was a good idea perhaps he should heal himself. He tries, but nothing happens, his limbs refuse to listen.

He can only watch as Moon picks his bow back up and fires at the beholder, watch as Bital tosses more spells at it and begins a great summon, He has lost track of Nega, but hopes all is well whit her. Finally, just as Bitals summoning is done, one of Moons well placed arrows goes trough the center eye of the demon, slaying it. But it all happened without his help, he tries to move but cannot, he tries to force his head to the side to see Nega or Moon, but cannot.” What is going on? Why cant I help my friends? Is everyone allright?” The confusion races trough his mind until a voice breaks trough to him, the voice is Moons.

“Oh gods have mercy! Bital! Bron has been turned into stone!”

Then he sees only darkness, It is cold...

So that is how it happened. Perhaps it will serve as warning to others... oh... wait.. META. Never mind. *winks* Good tale, I apologize in advance for the many bad jokes that are bound to come of it, but stoned druids are too hard to resist. Even the fish in the barrels would agree.
It has been my experience that, given the opportunity, people will in the end do what they truly desired to do in the beginning. Save time, let them, then they have only themselves to blame or you to thank.
