Toilets of the World!

Post by NickD »

And now for something completely less political!

This reminded me of something I noticed many years ago and long since forgot about. Toilets seem to be different in most countries I've been to. I forget all the details, but in Finland you pull a lever up to flush the toilet instead of pushing a button. In the Netherlands, most of the public toilets had a anti-septic cloth dispenser in the toilets so you can wipe down the toilet seat. And they had those pyramid urinals in the steet! Although I was stumbling around in a daze for some reason *cough* when I saw them and I may have urinated on a piece of art or something... A lot of American toilets had paper toilet seat dispensers. There was also a country (I forget which one) that didn't have buttons, but used an infra-red thingy that you waved your hand in front of to flush the toilet instead! I never saw one, but I heard that in Japan, there are some toilets that are just a hole in the ground that you squat over! I've also heard that in Japanese women's toilets they have this thing that plays the sound of a toilet flushing so women don't get embarrassed by the sound of their tinkling!

Post your exciting stories of toilets from the around the world!

And let's try not to make this thread political, eh?

German toilets are by far the most vile.

Some toilets here are automatic, most public toilets have a flusher that can be pushed any direction. The ones in the home are pushed down flushers.
Now i ran into one in saudi arabia that was a stainless hole in the ground with two stainless footprints. (shows where to place your feet so you can hit the hole). It also had a stainless hose to spray and no toilet paper dispenser.
The urinals was a troft/rail system.

Oh no they aren't. The porcelain squat-holes with the rubber hose and tap I saw all over asia trumps anything I've ever encountered before. Once your off the tourist path and away from western-style hotel rooms it's downright nasty in most places.

The 'squat holes' aren't just limited to asian countries. I remember traveling through Spain on vacation with my family. We stopped at a public rest stop on some highway. The men's room had a row of holes and footprints (for better target acquisition). The other side was a trough.

Of course growing up in the Phillippines I'm sorta used to doing my business in odd places. My grandmothers house only had running water in the kitchen. To do number two you had to go out to a handpump and fill a can of water.

The most unusual toilet I've ever seen was in my house in Germany had the commode in a closet off the stairwell. It didn't have sitting water like what you would normally expect. Instead it had a shelf. When you flushed, the high pressure water would scrape the shelf clean.

The most horrific toilet I have been to was a the train station in Tunis. A few centimeters of water on the floor and a smell of bog. I actually did not get as far as the toilet cause the smell almost made me throw up.

The asian squat toilets are actually pretty clean since nothing actually touches it but your feet. If you got bad knees though, yer screwed.

I'm finding American toilets to be the most unpleasant so far, just the exact wrong height for tall people.

Big flush, little flush 4tw!

Yeah the cheap toilets are made for short people here, the one i am putting in the house i am remodeling is 3ft high to the seat. The toilet in this house is put up on a 1inch platform.

Shorter toilets are better for you. It helps with the uh... movement if you're squatting more. I think the Americans started making toilets shorter years ago, copying the Japanese.
