I would make it a Hall of Mirrors and you could go to any Shadow... Ahem sorry I mean server by going through any of them.Swift wrote:Booo.
I was thinking more a City of Doors type test with a gazillion doors set up with portals!

Re: 24 Hour Cool Down between Servers
I would suggest making the central portal the docks of Waterdeep. It makes more sense than having every player pass through Sigil or some other extra-planar local. And it could be entirely IC - the docks would have ships that take people where they need to go, there could be a gate for overland travel, and you could put in all the stores and shops and even a tavern or two. So, the central transport hub would actually be IC.
Just my two-cents. I will happily go whatever way ALFA decides.

Under such a scheme, we'd have a "Baldur's Gate" server, for example, which was BG city, Beregost, Nashkel, Gullykin, Candlekeep, Ulgoth's Beard, Tempus' Tears and the roads connecting them. Maybe an area off to each side of the roads in a few places (like there's one odd area off of the Way of the Lion that doesn't go anywhere; it's not needed to travel anywhere, but it'd also be very silly to make it its own server). We'd also have a Cloakwood server, a Wood of Sharp Teeth server, an Underdark Under the Sword Coast server, a Undercellar and that whole mess server, A Firewine Ruins server, a Durlag's Tower server, and a Cloud Peaks server. Only one or two of those would actually have to be running at any given time, so we'd just load the stuff that people are using and hold onto the others until they're requested/unload the empty ones when they're empty. Would allow BG to become as large as builders wanted to make it while fudging the definition of persistence (that is, "up when people go to use it, and maybe up other times" instead of "up all the time regardless of anything else").
We'd also have a triage server where no actual play happened, and which had no user interface associated with it. You'd click log in there and, after a couple loading screens, just be on the server your character is on (similar to the automatic redirection we do if you log into the wrong server now), or onto the core server at the portal to the child server, if no host is capable of loading up the child you were previously on. At most, you'd go into a little holding cell type room for a minute or so while the server you were on loads up, with a "Imma chargin mah lazer" explanation.
We had pretty-serious talk about the idea before, and tech has implemented enough stuff such that we can have pilot servers (we have direct server-to-server messaging, seamless portaling to adjacent servers, and cross-server tells). But, y'know, why write the stuff that becomes super important when you're bringing mini server #10 live (like the triage server, or the reboot w/ new module on demand) when we don't even have mini server #1?
Re: 24 Hour Cool Down between Servers
isn't this similar to the 000 server Dorn worked on. he had a good number of overland maps for FR built, and people were to use it to travel, then portal into the built servers. ... and we should split this thread off...

Re: 24 Hour Cool Down between Servers
Yeah probably.
The immediate issue sounds like it can be resolved with build, anyway. I would bet that Teric and/or Curmudgeon would be happy for some volunteer help to make it happen, and I would be happy for feedback about how hard it is for new builders to make a portal / how accurate and discoverable the documentation is.

I have no idea how the thread steered in this direction.
My comment was purely in response to finding Zelks method of discovering just how much the database could handle as being too boring

I made MS's portal by copying BG's, then testing them twice. The documentation consisted of irc talk about how easy it was.

Re: 24 Hour Cool Down between Servers
I think the clock that calculates the "cool down" time is running backwards.
I left TSM yesterday (just OOC to avoid the crashes) and am in BG trying to transit back.
Upon attemting the portal I get a negative countdown.

Using portal trigger.
Last successful portalling attempt was 2014-02-02 21:44:06
Recent server timestamp was 2014-02-01 22:09:42
Estimate RL hours since last portalling: -23
You must wait at least another 47 RL hours before portalling again.

Re: 24 Hour Cool Down between Servers
And then 10 RL minutes later (long enough to make a few forum posts)
I try again and it says I've 25 RL since portalling and ready to portal.
Weird ....
anyway... just reporting

Re: 24 Hour Cool Down between Servers
Please submit bugs as tickets for ACR (or find existing tickets and include any information that would add to understanding of the problem), or to the method of the HDM's preference for servers.
Reports that go into discussion threads, chat, or in-game tells will tend to get forgotten, and thus tend to not get fixed.
Except this one-- in which case I note that it hadn't yet been 24 hours, and the error message was just wrong. But the error message is documented already; just not fixed yet.

i believe that logging out and back in will fix the weird timer on server AT cooldowns. everyone i tell it to seems to have it fixed by this method.
