The Hobbit or A Hobbit Movie ? [spoilers inside]
Re: The Hobbit or A Hobbit Movie ? [spoilers inside]
lol yea agreed 100%
Go watch Dead Poets Society again to be enlightened.
Seriously, going to the Hollywood version of The Hobbit and gettin' all critical?
It's about popcorn, pepsi and major retinal stimulation. Not award winning acting or even being "same as the book" or not - which we all knew would never happen, LOL... sigh
Can't wait to see it.

Na, as long as you know it's crap when you go in and expect nothing you can enjoy it.loulabelle wrote:You guys are really making me feel so excited to go see it with my brother next weekend. I suppose at the very least I'll get to enjoy James Newton-Howard (composer for you philistines) and spend quality time with my brother. UK IMAX is also superior to my local US one so maybe that too!
But seriously,
It is crap.
Like a watching a Bugs Bunny episode gone wild.

Yeah, its not. I didnt want to go see a superhero movie tho. I realize some people like superhero movies, but 2.5+ hours of superhero-esque fight scenes wasnt what I thought I was paying for.

I recall liking the first one, but also rocking a nice fever and probably horribly contagious with the flu. Likely i just liked the fact that i didn't throw up during. Being a good citizen (and staying home not infecting everyone around me) < advance booked $20 imax ticket.
James Newton-Howard will make it ok. I'll report back in a week ;-f

Re: The Hobbit or A Hobbit Movie ? [spoilers inside]
The fight scenes ruined it for me. Most of the rest I could stomach, after 4 PJ Tolkien movies I'm prepared and know where he's coming from. I am used to the incompetent story telling and mostly flat/awkward/embarrassing sentimentalism and can overlook it. As usual, it is best in its visual reimagining of Middle Earth, for example I loved the look and feel of Lake Town. I really appreciate his ability to give life to the less realised parts of the books(s). I even enjoy the way they pull as much as possible from the LOTR appendices etc. to tell more stories about Middle Earth.
But the thing I was most disappointed in was the Beorn episode. How is it possible to botch it as bad as that? And why is it Swedish actors refuse to be able to act?!!

In other words, give the guy a break. At least he landed a role in The Hobbit. What have you done to improve the genres role in our cultural lives lately?TheOneRing.Net wrote:... Other things he says include that he wasn’t feeling insecure when filming The Hobbit because, with experience, his confidence as an actor has improved and also that he is trying to improve on his skills in English since he, because most of his roles has been in Sweden and before he didn’t get so many international offers, haven’t really taken any advanced classes in the language. No kudos to:
"Never Say Never Mind: The Swedish Bikini Team"??
A truly classic of Swedish cinematic expertise, no doubt indeed.

Re: The Hobbit or A Hobbit Movie ? [spoilers inside]
Ok, maybe I am blowing off steam a little, mainly due to PJ exasperation. I want to modify my statement to apply to most Swedish actors after the Bergman era. With some notable exceptions, Ola and Noomi Rapace are excellent. And a couple of others. But there is a particular breed of actors from our country who are just so incredibly wooden. It's like Persbrandt might as well have been in his own kitchen complaining to his wife about work or Swedish cultural politics or something.boombrakh wrote:Bah! I'm off to see the Hobbit 2 in an hour...

Re: The Hobbit or A Hobbit Movie ? [spoilers inside]
... and I enjoyed it. I have made my peace with the fact that the Hobbit trilogy won't be following the book. So, for an action fantasy movie it was pretty good.

Re: The Hobbit or A Hobbit Movie ? [spoilers inside]
Finally saw it with lowered expectations, and it was enjoyable. It's not the Hobbit of Tolkien, but a hollywood Marvel Comics adaptation loosely based on the Hobbit, and taken in that light it was as enjoyable as The Avengers.
I still long for a day when LOTR/Hobbit movies that take the source work more seriously than dollar signs are made.
